Sheridan Taylor

I have been a private tutor for over twenty years and have worked formally within the education system as a lecturer (Maths- Quantitative Research Methods, Psychology- Cognitive), supervisor, and examiner, all at undergraduate and postgraduate level. In terms of my own educational history, I read Mathematics with Physics at New Hall, Cambridge, followed by Classics at Somerville, Oxford. I then completed a BPS accredited Psychology MSc at Kingston University, followed by a PhD in Psychoeconometrics. I have since returned to Cambridge as a postgraduate to complete a PACES (Educational Assessment) and MEd (Transforming Practice) at Sidney Sussex College. I usually work with students who are preparing for upcoming “high-stakes” examinations, and am very experienced in terms of how best to prepare these students in relatively short time-frames. I always teach conceptually, as I believe that the students who are the most likely to succeed are the ones who understand the underlying concepts and theories, as they will be able to apply their knowledge effectively. Whilst I understand that occasionally rote learning is necessary, I really try to avoid encouraging that with my students! I use past papers and also write my own material so that questions are tailored to each student. This personalised approach helps to consolidate their knowledge and check their understanding. Whilst I do expect my students to work hard, I ensure that my lessons are always conducted in a friendly and interactive manner. There is no such thing as a “stupid” question, and I encourage my students to ask as many as they wish, whether or not they fall within the confines of their syllabus. I shall always encourage enquiring minds and that is something I feel is often lacking from traditional classroom settings! Whilst I pride myself on helping to foster enthusiasm and passion in my students for their chosen subjects, as a tutor, I am very much results driven (according to the individual student’s ambitions).

What do you love most about your job?

It is extremely rewarding to see my students grow and develop academically and to achieve their goals. I keep in touch with a number of students even when they go off to university. I love hearing from them, seeing them graduate and start their dream careers.

What inspired you to start your own business?

Having my own company ensures that I am always in a position where I can put all of my students' needs first. A number of education companies have a business model whereby advisors are in some way incentivised to enroll students on certain packages, often when those support packages are not in the individual student's best interests. I only offer tailored support and would never adopt a "one size fits all" policy. My services are entirely transparent and I only ever give genuine, unbiased advice.

Why should our clients choose you?

Clients should only choose me if they are interested in my areas of expertise! I am very realistic in terms of the services I offer, and it is very much based on the experience I have and the knowledge I have acquired over the years. I am very honest with clients, and if I am requested to undertake work which lies outside my typical arena, I will say at the outset so as not to waste anyone's time, or fall short of the client's expectations.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

Yes, the majority of my services are offered on Zoom or Skype, although I am able to use other platforms on request.

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

All of my services are offered online, although I do offer some face-to-face appointments. The vast majority of students opt for online/remote sessions, so the face-to-face contact I have is, in reality, minimal.
