What makes a great website?

Anyone can say a great website needs a pretty design or be filled with SEO-charged keywords. To me, that's just 'A Website'.

A great website begins with a solid foundation—its construction. While page builders can deliver good results, custom coding is the gold standard for creating truly exceptional websites. This approach allows for optimisation down to each individual line of code, resulting in higher performance, enhanced security, and greater accessibility - all resulting in higher rankings and conversions.

Performance is crucial for user experience and can be easily measured using tools like Google’s Pagespeed Insights. Why don't you compare your site with ours (https://testvalleydigital.com/) and see the difference?:

A top-tier website should achieve 'green' scores across all four metrics in Pagespeed: Performance, Accessibility, Best Practices, and SEO. These scores reflect a site’s ability to load quickly, provide a sleek user experience, and maintain high standards of security and accessibility.

In one sentence - a great website should not just be visually appealing but also technically sound, ensuring it meets, and exceeds, user expectations every time, no matter who or where they are.

What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?

The initial scoping questionnaire is incredibly thorough—some may liken it to an interrogation!

Joking aside, it's important for us a holistic, all-encompassing view of your business. We need to understand your expectations for the project and define the measurable goals and deliverables.

Rather than listing all our questions here, and in our promise to be different from 'the other guys', you’re welcome to view the very questionnaire we use as a starting point for all projects here. However, after learning about the nuances of your business, we may tailor this on a per-project basis:

What do you love most about your job?

What I love most is transforming a slow, underperforming website, that's hardly worth the domain it's listed on, into something that both the client and I can be proud of. Looking back at the before/after photos of some projects dear to me never fails to make me smile :)

Though my hands have never had the skills to transform someone's house or to perform life-saving surgeries, I'm proud that I can at least use them with my peculiar fascination with technology to help like-minded business owners' dreams come true.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I started building websites when I was in school, using Wix to create pages for video game communities I was involved with at the time (another one of my 'peculiar fascinations'). Very early on, I realised the limitations of flipping templates and soon signed up for my school's coding club to learn the programming languages of the web.

I soon used these skills to build websites properly for these communities, earning enough pocket money to buy myself extra treats at the school canteen. In that sense, I've always had an entrepreneurial mind.

So after taking a break from web development during my time at university, I decided that I wanted to put my skills to use in the real world, not just to promote gaming communities. But there was one glaring issue – custom coding websites meant my clients wouldn't be able to make edits themselves.

Coming up with the £0-down model made perfect sense – I could bring the proper way of building websites to smaller businesses, 'saving' them from the pains and confines of page builders, and stay with them long-term to make any edits they needed.

This gap in the market, combined with the opportunity to work with driven, like-minded people, is what led to Test Valley Digital.

Why should our clients choose you?

There are two main things that set me apart from other developers and agencies:

1. The custom-coded approach that I take to websites. Put very simply, this allows me to optimise for performance and accessibility, which improves user experience, keeping users on the page longer, directly raising your rankings on Google, and increasing your chance at conversion.

2. The 'as-a-service' model we use. If you choose Test Valley Digital, you get a website and a team of professionals available, on-demand, with truly unlimited use of our time for edits, updates, support, and maintenance. Not many people can promise a holistic service like that.
