Andy
I have been attending counselling sessions with Josh at Horizon for just over 18 months. Nobody ever said embarking on the process of having counselling was easy, however having lost a close friend in unforeseen circumstances and having never really addressed my own underlying mental health needs, including depression and anxiety, I arrived at the door of Horizon, in bad shape mentally.
As I guy (a mans man!) in my mid 30’s with a young family, opening up and discussing how I had arrived at this point in my life wasn’t natural, comfortable or easy, however from the outset I warmed to Josh, finding him relatable, personable, understanding and a decent bloke.
I knew that if I was to take control of my mental health and resolve some of my issues, what I needed in a mental health counsellor was someone that I could work with, who understood me as a guy, as a dad, as business person & as a son, which Josh did.
It took time to build a rapport and working relationship with Josh, based on trust and confidentially (Josh’s style isn’t let’s all talk about feelings today and cry it out whilst sat around a camp fire, it was more like having a chat with a good friend or colleague).
Slowly I was able to open up and discuss various life events I had experienced. Once I became more familiar and accepting of the process and style of counselling that Josh offers, he provided me with some excellent strategies, hints & tips to help me start overcoming my anxiety, but the most beneficial part of my counselling was a having a regular meeting with someone (Josh) whereby I could discuss whatever was on my mind in a safe environment without fear of being judged!
If you are a guy reading my review of Josh, all I can say is I have laughed with Josh, I have argued with Josh, I have displayed frustration amongst many other emotions in our sessions, however I am now in a place whereby I am a much better person for having had mental health counselling.
In my opinion, everything you think it’s going to be it’s not and for guys there is a stigma around counselling, however overtime you will be surprised about how much of a positive impact counselling has, not only on your own mental state but also the way you get-on within the world around you (work & home in my case) and in my experience you will see improvements in the relationships you have with other people around you if you are willing to have a go and accept some help for a counsellor such as Josh!
Josh, I couldn’t have done it without you, Thanks a Million!
