Looking for a Home Insulation professional?

We all know how nippy it can be in the winter months. Some of us choose to wrap up extra warm, while a few of us reach for that dial and crank the heating up extra high. Both of these options work well in the moment, but end up being a temporary fix. So what’s a better way to keep the whole family snug and to keep your heating bills under control? The answer is simple - home insulation.

Keeping cosy with Home Insulation

What is Loft Insulation?

Loft or home insulation is a fantastic way to preserve the heat inside your house. With all of the money you can save with loft insulation, it is an investment that will pay for itself many times over. However, getting your loft insulated should be carried out with the help of a seasoned professional. At Bark, we have a great selection of loft insulation specialists, all of which can make sure your home gets the treatment it deserves.

What should I look for in a Loft Insulation professional?

So what do you need in a Loft Insulation Specialist? Thankfully, Bark makes contacting professionals and getting quotes easily. Getting a quote is simple but there’s more than the price to consider.

A few questions you may want to think about asking before you decide to hire are:

  • Do you have a website showing past work or references from past projects?
  • What type of installation do you recommend for my home?
  • How long will the job take?
  • Do you provide a guarantee?
It’s best to agree on these points before you hire an Insulation expert.

What types of Loft Insulation should I choose?

There are various types of loft insulation that can be applied to your home. Each type of installation has its own pros and cons, with each being installed in different ways. Regardless of which installation you decide to go for, Bark has plenty of professionals that will help you complete a quality job.

  • Blanket Loft Insulation - Blanket loft insulation is the most common type of insulation. It comes in various rolls, and is made from mineral fibre, rock or felt. Blanket insulation is also very easy to install. It can make for good insulation, especially in exposed wall cavities.
  • Loose-Fill Insulation - Loose-fill insulation is a mixture of lightweight materials. Typically, these materials are cellulose, fibre, cork granules or even greener materials such as recycled newspaper. Loose-fill insulation is easy to fit between differently spaced joists or the walls of your home, and can be arranged around obstructions easily. They are also a good solution to top up existing insulation in your loft.
  • Sheet Loft Insulation - Sheet loft insulation is great for covering sloping roofs and comes in the form of firm boards. These boards can be fire and moisture resistant if desired. They can also be installed pre-cut to match certain sizes of loft, although this comes at a surcharge. Sheet loft insulation also includes green options such as cork and wood board. They make for good insulation in loft conversions and can be covered with plasterboard to make for a more attractive appearance.
  • Blown Fibre Insulation - Blown fibre insulation is where the insulation used is blown into the gaps between your joists. The solution is very quick and makes for a perfect solution where getting access to your loft is difficult. This insulation, because of the ease of use, is a little more expensive.

Do I need to insulate my home?

So how does insulation work? Loft installation involves installing a barrier of material between either the joists of your attic (the beams that run along the floor) or your attic’s rafters (the beams that support your roof).

Either way, the insulation works to slow down the heat that is transferred between your home and the outside. This results in your home being warmer in the wintertime – and cooler in the summer. The most notable difference between these two types of insulation is the way they distribute heat. Joist insulation will keep your living space warm while resulting in a cooler attic. The latter will warm up both of these parts of your house.

Making the jump to loft insulation is very beneficial. Insulating the loft can help to lower your heating bills, saving you plenty of money in the process. Loft insulation is also very good for the environment, as it lowers your carbon footprint. You can also expect the energy efficiency of your home to improve. In turn, the combination of these factors will help to increase the value of your house. Loft insulation also lasts a very long time – more than 40 years, in fact.

While it is possible to insulate your loft by yourself, it can be a tricky task without the appropriate know-how. You may also find yourself installing insulation incorrectly – different roofs and spaces will need correct treatment. Things could also be made more difficult if your loft space is small, or there are other problems (like dampness, for instance). Insulating a flat roof is a different ball game altogether. Because of its shape, flat roofs have to be insulated from the outside. Trying to insulate a flat roof without professional help is extremely difficult.

How much does Loft Insulation cost?

As we mentioned before, going ahead with loft insulation will not only benefit your home greatly but will also pay for itself many times over.

The efficiency you gain from loft insulation can save you plenty of money on bills – in fact, the cost you spend carrying out installation can usually be made back within a couple of years.

When having a roof insulated, it is recommended that the installation is at least 270 mm thick. Different materials can be used for this purpose. Among these materials are mineral wool, cellulose and fibreglass. Most of these will come packaged together in a roll, which is then laid out between each joist.

If you use your loft for storing items, adding boards above the joists is another cost to consider. Items cannot sit on the insulation material, as compression will stop it from being effective. These additional boards are pricier than the insulation themselves – but depending on how big your attic is, you might not need to use much. Dampness in your loft will also have to be tackled, as any water can damage the installation itself.
