I always focus on style and the quality of the image at the best possible price. I have 25 years experience photographing families, newborns, weddings and business headshots portraiture. I studied HND Photography and Design at Newcastle School of Art and then cut my teeth assisting commercial photographers in editorial, fashion and advertising before starting my own portraiture and wedding photography business. My photography on this profile has examples of my wedding photography and further down, business headshots examples. What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?

Know your technical stuff so you can focus on creativity, composition and perhaps most importantly, getting to know your subject. Its crucial to build their confidence and help them be at ease infront of the camera - although some subjects - the very young or old, are of course "naturals" and need very little encouragement. I do prepare for my shoots but try not to over plan - despite many years of experience and ideas for what works well for different kinds of portraiture, wedding or party etc. I also like to respond spontaneously to the subject in front of me and surprise myself with some of the results ince I have the staple shots in the bag. A few of the best pictures in my portfolios are ones I did not plan - rather opportunities that presented themselves and were hopefully seized with some skill. I always allow a generous amount of time for a shoot, because taking a good quantity of images also helps to ensure there will be some gems in there. Likewise, a shoot is nothing without a great edit - being able to spot those gems and then crop and "retouch" to maximum effect.

What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?

What is the occasion, its meaning and who will be involved? Ages? Particular characters, be it entertaining or exasperating? And perhaps most importantly, what sort of style of shoot are you looking for. Formal? Contemporary? Spontaneous? Or if it is a wedding, do you have some suggestions for local landmarks or street scenes etc where you might like to be photographed. Would you like to meet me there beforehand to 'walk me through' the shoot?

What do you love most about your job?

I enjoy the privilege of being asked to share people's important life moments, whether that be a family photoshoot, wedding, engagement party, christening or other occasion -- and hopefully seeing the delight on their face when I deliver what they had been hoping for, and perhaps surprise them. I also enjoy that no two shoots are ever the same. Taking people's portraits is not just about clicking the camera, it is about clicking with the subject. That can be easy or hard but is always engaging - and I am constantly learning and gaining experience in this aspect as much as in the technical aspects of my job.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I spent a "gap" year between school and university working and saving up to go travelling, particularly in India -- and it is the colours and vivacity which I met there that inspired my love of photography and decision to study for a degree at Newcastle College of Art. Subsequently, my time assisting a variety of photographers in London, from fashion and food, to cars and children, taught me the exciting technical and creative challenges of the job. When I then married and became a mother of two, setting up my own family, child and baby photography business seemed a natural progression. From there, I have expanded into party and wedding photography and undertaken shoots for the local council as well as corporate events - and found that my roots in portraiture, capturing people's quirks, foibles, best sides and unguarded moments, can lend itself well to the often more fluid demands of a wedding, party or corporate shoot.

Why should our clients choose you?

Contemporary. Spontaneous. Fun. Technically excellent.
