I decided to join Reach almost two years ago. Initially this was to lose weight but I soon realised that not only was I losing weight but I was also starting to feel much fitter and stronger!After about a year things started to slow down and I plateaued and I was no longer losing weight and centimetres. I recently turned 30 and realised I needed to do something about my health. Lee stood out to me as his classes seemed more challenging than the other trainers. After a consultation with Lee we arranged to do weekly 30 minute HIT sessions to help me with my weight loss. Lee gave me excellent information and nutritional advice as well as realistic and achievable goals from the start. The HIT sessions were challenging but Lee was always very encouraging and supportive throughout the process. After a while I could tell the difference in my fitness aswell as my weight. I have just finished 3 months of training with Lee and have lost 10.5kg of weight, which totally smashed my target. Infact I have lost more and am proud to say I am back at the weight I used to be when I went to uni, which at 30 years old I didn't think was possible. I contacted Dave as I like his holistic approach to training. Having had two shoulder impingement surgeries over 2 years (same shoulder) I had become very limited with my exercise and was wary of doing anything in the gym, consequently I wasn't doing much in strength training. Dave listened to my concerns and what I wanted to achieve and came up with a plan that now has me using my body in a way that will help prevent any further injuries, including the shoulder or he gives me an alternative if I find it too painful. He is now helping me improve my core strength and legs in preparation for a 6 day hike for the Camino Way in June. With my evidence and results based philosophy, I apply my knowledge to each client as an individual. Each person is built differently, meaning everyone will react to and perform exercises in a different way. I assess clients current experience level and work from there. When you build a house you don't start with the roof, you start at the bottom, creating strong foundations before building upon that in a progressive way. It is the same with training. We learn fundamental movements patterns before progressively adding load, volume and changing exercise complexity in order to keep you moving forward as your confidence and experience improves.
Consistency over time is the key to achieving your ideal physique. I preach to clients to never compare themselves to others as this will only lead to disappointment. Aim to be the best version of you. Realise that their will be bumps along the road and that progress is never linear. Life gets in the way sometimes but if you are consistent the majority of the time, small set backs mean nothing. Work hard, stay consistent and anything is achievable.
For me the most satisfying part of my job is seeing clients progress. The small wins are just as important as the big ones. It could be simply seeing a beginner to weight training improve their confidence in the gym and come to love training, helping someone to improve their quality of life through moving and sleeping better, or at the other end of the spectrum, it could be seeing someone achieve their goal physique after all the hard work, commitment and focus they put in to it. Helping others is my passion.
The current obesity crisis shows no sign of ending. We need to address this through a multi faceted approach with training and nutrition as the two go hand in hand. There is so much misinformation out there which confuses the general public, combined with personal trainers who don't have their clients best interests at heart. I want to help people avoid making the mistakes that I have made in the past and get them to their health and physique goals faster.
