I joined Ultra about two months ago & I love it. It can be hard work, but is so rewarding. The focus is on learning to deal with exactly the violent situations in which you, Joe/Jane Public, would be most likely to find yourself & in a way that, realistically, you could actually make work for you even when you are stressed out of your mind. Marc brings tremendous passion & dedication not only to teaching Krav Maga, but also to making Ultra much more than "just" a Krav Maga school. When you join Ultra, you join a family & everyone, instructors & students, is friendly, welcoming & encouraging. Time & again I have found that the members of Ultra will bend over backwards to help each other out, whether it's something to do with the club or more generally. The instructors are very safety conscious & will highlight techniques, or parts of techniques, which are potentially dangerous & ensure that you perform them slowly, gently & carefully. That being said, Krav Maga isn't about learning Forms or Kata - right from the outset you will be striking pads & performing techniques with a partner. If you don't wear MMA gloves, expect some bruised &/or skinned knuckles, at least until you have developed your technique & conditioned your hands a little. And you will sometimes come away with a bruised arm if you don't wear an arm protector. Don't let the occasional bump & bruise put you off - they are the product of realistic & hard training. If it really bothers you, just get yourself the arm protectors & MMA gloves, both inexpensive & readily available on Amazon. Marc or one of the Ultras will even give you a link if you ask & there's no macho culture amongst the Ultras, so you won't be looked down upon for wearing them. Joining Ultra Krav Maga was something of a step outside my comfort-zone, but it has turned out to be the best decision I've made in some time. In it I have found an activity that I thoroughly enjoy, which has increased my fitness, which is teaching me skills that could potentially protect my life & which has introduced me to a social circle of warm, friendly people amongst whose number I am proud to include myself.
