Shenley Jujitsu Club

Buckinghamshire

‘19 Certificate of Excellence

Jujitsu is a pure self-defence martial art, similar to Judo and Aikido. There are strikes, throws and locks. We teach defence against strikes, grabs and weapons such as sticks and knives. Jujitsu provides a wide range of techniques from pure escape, to controlling your attacker to the ground, to self-defence when you are cannot get away. Students start at red belt and move up through the belts by grading regularly. Getting to black belt is not the point of learning a martial art, it is more about the journey of learning control and technique. All the instructors have First Aid certificates and extended Disclosure and Barring checks for working with children.

What do you love most about your job?

Seeing junior and adult beginners gain in confidence as they move through the belt grades. Hearing stories from juniors about how self defence has helped them with bullying at school. A nervous adult student later went on to join the police.

I hope our students never have to use the jujitsu they learn, but if they ever should need to, it could save their lives - even if it's just avoiding a potential incident or knowing it's better to get away rather than fight.

What inspired you to start your own business?

The club is a non-profit group rather than a business. All the instructors teach for free and have real jobs the rest of the week. We all joined the club as beginners and have worked our way through to black belt instructors. I took over the club as I had the most spare time after work. I'll pass the club on to one of the newer black belts one day, as it was passed to me.

Why should our clients choose you?

We really are a friendly club and believe that everyone should learn some self defence skills even if they only join for a short while.

We encourage students if they want to train for competition, but our main focus is on self-defence. We train to defend against multiple attackers who may be armed with knives and sticks. We use the opponent's weight against them for throws, strikes and (for the adults) locks. Our instructors each have 20 years of experience.

Talk to us if you'd like a session for your company, or an all female class, or a pure self-defence low-impact session on a different night. We will help if we can.
