Learning to play the guitar

Find your style

Guitars come in all shapes and sizes, from nylon-stringed acoustic guitars to steel-stringed electric guitars. The good news is that the majority of skills are transferable, so you don’t need to choose your style or genre right at the beginning. If you’re set on being the next Santana then that’s great – plug in your amp and start playing. For others, learning the fundamental scales and techniques will put you in good stead for future specialisation.

Practise makes perfect

Expert tuition during your guitar lessons will be invaluable in learning your new skill. As with everything, practise makes perfect. As such, your tutor will be able to set out tasks for you to practise in your own time. Musical talent is one thing, but everyone has to start somewhere. You might be practising bar chords, or simply playing notes on your instrument. Stick at it and you’ll quickly see improvements.

Play your favourite songs

Learning to play the guitar is incredibly fun and rewarding. Scales and techniques are essential in building a strong foundation, but you’ll soon want to start strumming along to your favourite songs. Guitar tabs are widely available online for popular bands and musicians – your guitar teacher will be able to recommend the best ones. Simply load them up and start learning, and you’ll soon be singing along to your own chords!

What do I need for my guitar lessons?

We would always advise purchasing your own guitar. It doesn’t have to be an expensive guitar, it’s just nice to get used to your own personal guitar. We can supply everything else that you need, including new strings, plectrums or capos. Just turn up with your guitar and we can get started.

Are my fingers going to hurt?

If you’re learning on a steel stringed guitar, you may find that your first sessions are limited by your finger strength. However, you’ll soon find that they adapt to the strings, and you’ll be able to play your guitar for much longer.

How often should I have guitar lessons?

Playing the guitar regularly is the quickest way to improve your musical skills. We recommend that you have a one hour lesson every week, although this does depend on your skill level. A minimum of one session every two weeks is necessary – we’ll make sure that you have lots to practise in the meantime!

Is there anything else your students should know?

Not really – except that you’re going to have a lot of fun. All of our teachers are very passionate about music and are very experienced guitar teachers. We’ve taught everyone from 6 year old children (we’re CRB checked) to 60 year olds. It’s never too late to learn. Even if you’re an experienced guitar player, we see that structured lessons and practise can mean continual improvement.
