Agenta Counselling, Psychotherapy & Coaching

Surrey

I support clients seeking solutions to a wide range of issues, challenges, stress and distress. This can be achieved through Counselling (shorter term), Psychotherapy (longer term). If requiring a solution-oriented response to a situation, I offer a coaching approach as the right strategy for a transformative outcome. Integrating the latest up-to-date modalities for complex issues arising from early traumatic experiences, my practice can be described as trauma-based, attachment-focused and resource-oriented. I have 20 years of post qualification experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy, and full accreditation and registration as a member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy). I am a Leadership and Executive Coach, qualified as a Practitioner Coach and accredited with the EMCC (European Mentoring and Coaching Council) To support my additional professional qualifications and areas of expertise I am also a member of the following: ESTD (European Society for Trauma and Dissociation ) and its UK Network EMDR UK and Ireland (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) My core qualification is integrative (Post Grad Diploma in Integrative Counselling); this enables the delivery of a finely client's attuned approach that responds to the unique needs of each client and their goals for therapy. Some clients will need a solution-oriented approach to support them in reaching their goals, other clients need to be accompanied in the grieving and repair of broken bonds; for some clients their past history need to be understood and disentangled before they can engage in the present. Some clients will respond to robust challenges, others need gentle and sensitive resonance. Not one client is identical, not one session is the same. What sort of issues do my clients bring to the sessions ? Many personal, every-day life, professional (or organisational)-related problems can be helped through counselling. This is about making a positive choice to get the help that you need, when you need. Don't wait until a problem has grown to become unmanageable - rather address early the issues, before they become entrenched. Some examples; Relationships and relational issues, problems in the couple Family system fractures and dysfunctions (problems with siblings, cultural integration and identity issues) Bereavement and other losses Psychosexual issues, LGBTQ+ Substance abuse and other behavioural dependencies. Eating disorders and body issues. Depressive and anxious symptomology, including panic attacks, phobias and OCD Various types of trauma disorders: single event trauma, PTSD and complex trauma and dissociative symptoms, including the transgenerational transmission of trauma Childhood sexual abuse, domestic abuse Work-related issues: emotional distress in professional life (lack of direction, stress,“burnout”, bullying, harassment) For some, issues are not clearly delineated in mind. They are more to do with a diffuse sense of hopelessness or low mood and a lack of motivation and interest in engaging with their life and projects. The initial part of the process will be dedicated to identifying what is the trouble, before engaging into processing negative self-beliefs and distressing memories. If we are addressing trauma issues, the preparatory phase of the work (to stabilise symptoms) will be absolutely essential before any processing of trauma takes place and the length of this preparatory phase will vary according to the complexity of the issue. I am also Trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing); Some suggested paths that clients can take: Short-term counselling (6 - 12 weeks) Suitable if you want to talk about a present day problem and learn new ways of dealing with issues and handling challenging events and being better at relating with others. Longer term psychotherapy (12 weeks +) Beneficial if you wish to explore a deeper level of understanding of self and life and how aspects of the past may be restricting your life in the present. Aiming to facilitate change at a deeper level, psychotherapy may help you develop a stronger sense of yourself and add more meaning to life.

What do you love most about your job?

Committed and passionately curious about the latest developments in the field of psychotherapy and counselling, I have embraced a non-parochial and open-minded pursuit of independent research and academic development to enhance and deepen both my theoretical understanding and the renewal of my therapeutic skills (thus seeking true integration of perspectives rather than a mere eclectic collection of modalities). To name a few: - Trauma, PTSD and the development of Resilience, Abuse and Addictions, Personality Disorders, Attachment and Neuroscience, CBT, Schema Therapy.

Why should our clients choose you?

What is paramount in my work for my clients is an integrative, collaborative and pluralistic approach to helping those with distress, trauma or simply those who find that they are at a crossroad in their life and have lost a sense of direction. The feeling of stuckness can be as damaging to our ability to be engaged in our life and with others as a traumatic experience (the latter is known and can be attributable to an incident, the former is vague and difficult to articulate)

Foremost, we aim to build a good therapeutic alliance (a good rapport) where trust and authenticity enables real work
• We work cooperatively to find a resolution of the problem;
• This is done gradually by exploring your thoughts and feelings;
• We pay attention to your developmental history, looking at important formative experiences that have contributed to your core beliefs and expectations;
• We help you to look at situations and problems from different points of view;
• We seek to provide empathy and compassion and these help foster your own empathy and compassion towards the self;
• We explore together your (maladaptive) attempts at solutions to problems, they may involve attempts to avoid emotional pain (through addictions and impulsive behaviours etc)
• We support you in facing situations that you have avoided in the past (both external situations and inner emotions), and try to find realistic adaptive solutions to alleviate life's problems.
• Most importantly, in all of this, we attune finely to timing and context as we cannot “expect the grass to grow faster by pulling at the blade” (proverb from Africa)
