Confidential and caring counselling

Remember you’re not alone

When life feels difficult, there’s always the urge to keep things bottled up. We compare ourselves to our loved ones and peers, and don’t want to feel like a burden. It’s vital to remember that everyone has anxieties and insecurities. The first step is admitting you need help dealing with them.

There’s often the misconception that counselling is solely for mental health problems. The reality is that counsellors provide a range of services. You may have lost someone close to you and need grief counselling. You could be feeling demotivated and need help setting new goals. The pressure is always there to handle whatever life throws at us. It’s important to remember that we all struggle. Bark can find you a professional to help you deal with problems anyone could face in their day-to-life.

A space just for you

A person may feel as though whatever problems they have are insignificant. This could indicate a lack of confidence or low self-esteem. A counsellor will validate your feelings, so you can work through them in a constructive way.

A counselling session is a place for you to express yourself without fear of judgement. This can be particularly helpful with couples counselling. Every couple has its own dynamic, and sometimes this makes open communication difficult. A professional counsellor creates a space for both parties to discuss their feelings. Rather than ‘taking sides’, they'll offer an impartial view on how best to move forward.

A professional counsellor will create a ‘neutral’ environment. Your concerns may stem from work or your home life. Going to counselling means that you're in a place away from where you feel stressed or worried. This is the ideal environment for you to evaluate your thoughts and feelings.

Getting things off your chest

There’s a stigma facing mental health that can hinder people from getting help. There are also times when we feel as though we cannot talk openly about things that trouble us. For instance, you may have issues with family and friends that you’re uncomfortable discussing with them. One of the reasons counsellors are helpful is that we often feel as though their advice is objective and unbiased.

The job of a professional counsellor is to listen, not judge. You might not think your problems can be solved instantly, but having someone to talk to makes all the difference. Your counsellor will listen to your concerns. They'll then draw on their experience to offer advice and alternative perspectives.

Tell us more about your professional background

I have a BA in Psychology and an MSc in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. My postgraduate degree fulfils the Level 4 requirement needed to become a counsellor. I specialise in helping people consciously examine their thoughts and behaviours. This will then help them develop healthy day-to-day coping mechanisms. After eight years of working as a therapist, I opened my own counselling practice.

What motivates you in your work?

It’s common for someone with mental health issues to think they’re a reflection of their character. My job is to reassure people who are struggling that they’re not weak or ‘bad.’ It takes incredible strength to fight what your mind tells you. Helping people find that strength is what drives me in my work.

What do you want people to know before they start counselling?

The first thing I want people to know is that there’s no shame in asking for help. The second is that you’re not defined by your problems. People often don’t reach out because they feel as though they’re beyond help. I can’t offer a quick fix. What I can offer is the building blocks of hope and reassurance.
