I have been a counsellor in Exeter for over seven years now, having completed an Advanced Diploma in Integrative Counselling. I've spent most of that time working as a volunteer counsellor for the NHS within their Depression & Anxiety Service. As such, I specialise in working with depression, anxiety and stress. That said, in my experience, whilst depression and anxiety are common, the reasons why people feel this way can be extremely varied and so I've worked with many different people with many different presenting problems.

Taking the step to go to therapy felt like it took me months maybe years. I looked through various therapists in Exeter and settled on Sue because I thought “she looks nice”. I went with my gut instinct and I’m so glad I did. Just completed 6 months of therapy with Sue, and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. Everything a therapist should be, and more. Funny, real, understanding, engaging. I looked forward to every session and the feeling of lightness and strength that I left with. Highly recommend. Thank you.

I provide client-focused counselling with a psycho-spiritual orientation. I work with a full range of client issues from those that constellate around crisis to those that represent an awakening, particularly since frequently these events are interrelated. A personal crisis may signal that someone is “standing on the threshold” between a habitual way of being, and a new way forward.

I offer integrative counselling for adults which helps them to move through loss. This sense of loss could be in the form of bereavement or the ending of a relationship. Or it might be the loss of confidence that often accompanies anxiety, of enjoyment in life that usually comes with depression or of self-esteem. I provide a compassionate, empathic, non-judgemental space where you can work through this loss in your own time with me alongside.

I offer a safe space where you'll be listened to with respect and understanding. We'll explore together, and you'll get a new perspective on whatever is causing you distress or preventing positive change in your life. Your situation is unique, so I’ll draw on a wide range of skills to help, including Mindfulness, CBT, Therapeutic Coaching, Focusing and Sand Tray therapy. This is usually called having an ‘integrative’ approach, but perhaps I’m best described as a pragmatic therapist: My only interest is what will work for you?

My name is Charlotte Feeny. I am a very experienced, qualified and fully insured Counsellor. I am a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and work according to its Ethical Framework. I work in central Exeter and from my home in Colyton and have a wide range of experience, working with a wide variety of issues including negative thinking, stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, bereavement, loss, self esteem, family problems, identity issues, anger management and many more. My approach to counselling is warm, full of empathy and down to earth: I want to help you to unravel your thoughts and feelings, and make positive changes in your life. I am not afraid to gently challenge and offer insights that might help you to do this. I believe that everyone has the right to be happy and fulfilled and hope that by working together that we can achieve this.
I love working with people and being able to help people find their way through challenging times.
I have always enjoyed working with people: I worked as an IT trainer for nearly 20 years after obtaining a Teaching degree. In 2005 I graduated with a degree in Psychology from the Open University and followed that with a Certificate and then Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling. I have experience of working in Bereavement Support for a hospice and have worked for a befriending service.
Working for myself means I am able to keep my work varied and that means I can provide the best possible service for my clients.
As well as being qualified and experienced in counselling I have had experience of a number of challenging issues in my own life which helps add depth to my counselling. Many of my clients tell me that I "get" them and I think that's an important thing as the counselling relationship is key to successful work. Although the things clients talk about can be challenging for them I feel I provide a safe space for them to do this, so they feel I am walking alongside them.
