Hi, I'm Sophie and I am a professional musician in the North West. With two Music degrees from the University of Manchester and a prestigious playing career, I can offer a wide range of expertise in my teaching. My Masters degree is in Composition, with specialisms within that of Music Theory and History. I am also a professional freelance Double Bass and Bass Guitarist, appearing regularly with orchestras and ensembles in the North, as well as over 30 musical pit-band credits and a well-respected function and wedding band. I am a confident and experienced teacher of music, both instrumentally and theory based. I can cover all aspects of music theory up to ABRSM Grade 8 and GCSE and A-Level. I can also teach History of Music as well as aiding with listening and writing exercises to prepare for exams and coursework. I can teach Bass Guitar and Double Bass in a variety of styles, including classical, rock, pop, jazz, blues and folk. I am happy to work through grades or through other methods of progression without exams if you prefer. I am experienced teaching children and adults of all abilities and happy to travel or teach in my home. I currently work for the Derbyshire Music Partnership and Stockport Music Service as an accredited teacher.
I love helping children and adults gain confidence through music. Seeing their faces light up as they get something they've struggled with or didn't make sense. I love working with people one-to-one as the students get so much more out of having a teacher's full attention. I enjoy exploring new music with students, learning what they like and building lessons based on that.
I've taught privately since I was at University to earn a little extra cash on the side. Now it's my full time job and I love it! I have students all around the Greater Manchester area and all the way out to the Peak District. Every day of my working week is different with different students and new challenges and it's great.
I'm a highly-qualified teacher willing to travel to your home or teach in my home studio (SK6). I'm flexible with lesson times and days. I'm friendly, approachable and fun but also dedicated and hardworking. I love teaching adults and children of all abilities and all styles. I play professionally in orchestras, bands and pit-bands and also freelance around the country. I specialize in several styles of music including classical, jazz, pop, rock, funk, blues and folk.

I’ve been having lessons with River Music School for over 2 years now and I enjoy every single week. Together with my teacher we create unique piano versions of iconic pop songs including “Wuthering Heights”, David Bowie’s “Life on Mars”, Madonna “Live to Tell” (and many more). I have learned a lot about different arrangements and how to translate songs with multiple vocals and instruments to a piano. It was very difficult to find a teacher who didn’t want to teach classical piano, finding someone who is so creative with brilliant ideas and patience is fantastic!

Matt has been teaching both my children piano and he is very professional and friendly. They have different abilities and my younger one is autistic and not always easy to focus during lessons but Matt is very patient. Highly recommended!
