Roof Repair

Dale was very professional with his survey & subsequent quote. He understood the brief but also made helpful suggestions & recommendations.

Although price wasn’t my only consideration (I wanted a good long lasting job done), they were actually the cheapest of the 4 quotes I got coming in £300 cheaper than the next quote & £1000 & £4000 respectively with the next two. Exactly the same brief so buyer beware!

The guys that turned up were knowledgeable & efficient & pleasant to work with. They kept to the scheduled work & timetable, did a good tidy up job with some fun banter as well. Would definitely recommend.

Roof Repair

Perks works were a pleasure to work with. From the start of my enquiry, Dale was efficient and polite. They arrived on time and dealt with our issue seamlessly. Dale followed up a week later to check that the repairs were successful - which they were. Great team to work with and I would definitely recommend. More...

Q&As

To determine if a loft is suitable for conversion, consider the following key factors:

1. Head Height
Measure the minimum height from floor to roof ridge—ideally 2.2 meters (7 feet 2 inches) or more.
Anything lower may require adjustments like raising the roof or lowering the ceilings below.
2. Roof Structure
Traditional cut roofs (common in older homes) with rafters are easier to convert.
Trussed roofs (common in post-1960s homes) may need additional support or structural changes.
3. Floor Space & Layout
Check if there's enough usable space after adding insulation, stairs, and structural support.
Consider how the new staircase will fit within the existing floor plan.
4. Roof Pitch & Shape
A steeper pitch provides more headroom and usable space.
Hip-to-gable conversions or dormers can add more space if needed.
5. Planning Permission & Building Regulations
Most loft conversions fall under Permitted Development, but some require planning permission (especially in conservation areas).
Compliance with Building Regulations is essential for insulation, fire safety, and structural integrity.
6. Chimneys, Water Tanks & Obstacles
Chimney stacks, water tanks, and structural beams may require repositioning or removal.
7. Accessibility & Stairs
The new staircase must meet building regulations, typically positioned above the existing staircase.
If unsure, contact us your professional loft conversion specialist or a structural engineer can assess your loft and recommend the best approach. Would you like help with planning yours?

A loft conversion typically follows these key stages:

1. Feasibility & Planning
Assess Suitability: Check head height, roof structure, and floor space.
Planning Permission: Most lofts fall under Permitted Development, but some may require permission.
Building Regulations: Ensure compliance with fire safety, insulation, and structural requirements.
Party Wall Agreement: Required if your property is terraced or semi-detached.
2. Design & Structural Planning
Architectural Drawings: Create plans detailing layout, stairs, and window placements.
Structural Calculations: An engineer checks if extra support is needed.
Approval Process: Submit plans for Building Control approval (if required).
3. Preparing the Loft
Clearing & Strengthening: Remove old insulation and reinforce floor joists.
Water Tanks & Chimneys: Relocate or remove any obstructions.
Scaffolding & Roof Access: Set up external scaffolding for easier work access.
4. Structural Work & Roof Modifications
Steel Beams & Supports: Install where needed for stability.
Dormer, Hip-to-Gable, or Velux Windows: Modify the roof structure for added space and natural light.
Insulation & Fireproofing: Install to meet Building Regulations.
5. Internal Construction
Walls & Ceilings: Construct partition walls and fit plasterboard.
Electrical & Plumbing Work: Install wiring, lighting, heating, and any necessary plumbing.
Staircase Installation: Fit a new staircase to comply with regulations.
6. Finishing Touches
Plastering & Painting: Smooth and decorate walls.
Flooring & Fixtures: Install flooring, skirting boards, and doors.
Windows & Ventilation: Ensure proper ventilation and fire escape routes.
7. Final Inspections & Certification
Building Control Inspection: Ensure work meets regulations.
Snagging & Adjustments: Fix any minor issues before sign-off.
Completion Certificate: Receive final approval from Building Control.
How Long Does It Take?
A typical loft conversion takes 6–16 weeks, depending on complexity.
