I immediately got a really good rapport and supportive feeling talking to Martin and the first session although disrupted by team connectivity issues went really well and like Martin's easy going and knowledgeable approach.

Martin was very supportive and showed good methods of dealing and understanding the issues that were raised by myself. Would recommend to others.

What do you love most about your job?
For me, the satisfaction is quite simply of being able to help people through those dark places that so many of us encounter at some time in our lives. There is always hope, and change is always possible... I began my life as a documentary-maker, sometimes broadcasting to millions of people, before becoming a university lecturer, where I suddenly had audiences of 15 or 20. Now, I talk to one person (or at the most, two people) at a time -- and it is the most fulfilling work I have ever done! At the psychotherapy practise I set up, Better-Talk, we have a couple of slogans: one is, 'We'd better talk'; and the other is, 'Sometimes it really helps to talk to another person -- You can talk to us'. In our modern societies, we don't always have a close friend or family member, or quite simply somebody we trust, to go to when we need help. The amazing thing about talking 1:1 and confidentially with a trained, experienced therapist is that it really DOES help -- and often much more rapidly than you expect.
What inspired you to start your own business?
When I was a university lecturer, I began to recognise that more and more of my students were coming to me not just for academic support but for pastoral advice -- advice regarding emotional difficulties. I realised that a lifetime of working as a documentary-maker all over the world had taught me to listen, which meant I had a certain ability to empathise and to help. So, it was a natural step for me to train as a therapist/counsellor. I won't say I wish it I had done it many years earlier, because I think it came at the right point in my life! Now, I'm able to bring a lifetime's experience to working with my clients. And the joy of setting up a group practice has been drawing together like-minded colleagues who are also friends, sharing our ideas and experiences with clients, and trying to offer the best, and best value, therapy available in the UK today.
Why should our clients choose you?
In a therapy session with me, you will meet somebody who listens with 100 per cent of my attention, who is warm, empathetic, totally non-judgmental, and who might even make the odd light-hearted comment, if it's appropriate! Life is all too short, and I believe every person has the right to live their life fully. When you hit obstacles, I'm there to help you make contact with the real you, and get back on track towards the future you really want.
Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.
While with notice I can see clients privately in Hampshire, Oxfordshire or London, the vast majority of my work is done online. I send you a link, you click on it in a browser, and we're off!
