What inspired you to start your own business?
The majority of the elderly population in the United Kingdom has traditionally been cared for in state-funded retirement homes and with the use of home care services. New legislation in 1993 obliged Local Authorities to spend a large proportion of their budgets to pay for domiciliary care services provided by the private sector. As a consequence of this policy the role of local authorities changed from being providers to being purchasers; whilst proving to be very cost effective.
There has also been a decrease in the number of independent care homes, this combined with the common preference for keeping family members in need of care within their own homes, has resulted in an increase in the number of privately funded service users.
As a direct result of the change in policy and the demographic trend towards longevity and earlier retirement, there is a large and expanding domiciliary care market. The industry is in a state of transformation with the implementation of the Care Standards Act 2000 and the requirement that all providers meet the National Minimum Standards for Domiciliary Care. Since 1 April 2003 the National Care Standards Commission has regulated all Homecare providers.
