What makes a great website?
Well, there's an old saying that you should never judge a book by its cover – this is true, however, we all judge what's presented to us in nanoseconds and we generally make decisions just as fast. If it doesn't appear to be right or doesn't make sense then we switch off and move onto the next thing. This is especially true of a website – it has to engage, grab our attention and present information or visuals pleasingly from the instant we view it.
As a society and as consumers we move quickly from one website to another if for some reason the page we land on isn't right for us - we don't hang around. A great website is a balance of conveying the correct visual message for the intended audience, coupled with a layout which reflects this, held together by images or graphic hooks or language which hold and retains the attention of the viewer.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
Generally, we ask the following 8 basic questions. Depending on the response we may ask the client to further elaborate.
=
Can you please describe your business?
Who is your target audience?
What do you wish to accomplish with this project?
Do you have seen other examples of work which you like?
Who would you say are your main business rivals?
Do you have a budget in place for this project?
What is your timescale for this project?
Do you have any questions which you would like to ask us?
Describe your creative process.
Generally, we tend to follow this five-step process:
Gathering research material and any related data and reading through/visually interpreting.
Allowing the ideas to filter down through my mind which helps to start to sieve out the good ideas from the bad.
Taking time to step away from the problem allowing it to 'settle' in my mind.
Allowing the subconscious idea to come back to me before further deep thought.
Presenting our idea/concept to the client and adjusting/redefining it based on feedback.
What information do you need from a client before you can start work?
We would generally ask the following questions:
Do you have images of your product/service we can use or do you wish us to employ a photographer or should we use stock images?
Do you have text or copy written for your project? If not do you wish us to write it or organise a Copywriter for you?
Do you have a purchase order which you can send if this is required by your organisation?
Do you have the contact details for those involved in the project?
Do you have a timescale for the first proof and for the final deadline?
What do you love most about your job?
I love the opportunity to work with so many different people from different backgrounds and all possible walks of life. It's one of the most interesting and rewarding parts of having a graphic design business (or indeed any business) - you never know what the next email, text or telephone call can bring or whom you'll be talking too. A lot of my friends started as clients but as you get to work together you get to know each other and this can help strengthen the working relationship and benefit the resulting work.
What inspired you to start your own business?
Well, I'm a qualified graphic designer and I'd always been employed within the creative industries so it made perfect sense for me to use my skills and experience to eventually work for myself. Having worked in advertising agencies, graphic design consultancies and large media companies I had all-round practical and actual experience - as well as the typical services you'd expect from a graphic designer, my roles have also included writing scripts for TV and radio ads, directing adverts, designing packaging for leading UK Supermarket chains, designing all the advertising and marketing/promotional literature for a leading clothing and home goods chain, designing labels and packaging for the drinks industry and much more besides!
Why should our clients choose you?
I have a huge amount of experience in all areas of graphic design and the creative industries.
I've worked on projects for some of the UK's biggest brands.
I'm reliable and trustworthy and quick to respond to any questions.
The fee I give is the fee you pay - no hidden charges.
Excellent communications skills.
Over 30 years of experience in the UK creative industry.
Graphic Design
Graphic design is about building a picture to portray your message clearly. Not only do you want your design to be bold and imaginative, but it’s also important to create the right balance of colour, format, imagery, fonts, and photography. This is where our expertise comes in, as we design your project to help you reach your end goal. We produce every type of marketing material your business might need: from stationery to annual reports, exhibition systems to product packaging, and vehicle livery to product packaging.
Digital Design and Web Development
You’d be surprised at how affordable a website can be - especially one that’s well-built and beautifully designed. We design and build websites for businesses no matter their niche - because whether you have a community development trust or a high-end business, the principles remain the same. It’s these principles we use to build your site: purpose, aesthetics, relevant and original content, and clear site navigation. You can’t go wrong when you think about the bigger picture. We also offer animated and moving graphics which are perfect for social media posts - or when a static image just doesn’t say enough.
Branding
Branding is more than just a logo; it’s your business identity. It’s how people recognise you and it’s how you stand out from competitors. The key is keeping it consistent (across every platform you use), and as people start to recognise it, they’ll trust you more - ultimately, this makes them more likely to use your services/products. With over 15 years of experience, it’s safe to say we know how to create a solid brand. We’ve worked in a wide variety of markets, but our approach is always the same: we work closely with you to understand your requirements, where your business is and where you’d like it to be.
Illustration
Individuality, personality, and expression; that’s what you get with a bespoke illustration. So, are you looking for something a bit different to make your business stand out? Illustrations are a great alternative to traditional graphics or photography - especially when some creative flare is required. We provide bespoke graphic illustrations to fit all your requirements. So, whether you are looking for a mural for your office, or some hand-drawn lettering - or even window graphics to capture the eyes of passersby - if you have an idea; we’ll have the solution.
Social Media
Are you a light social media user or a meticulous social media expert - or maybe somewhere in between? Whatever your approach to social media, we have monthly tiered packages to help manage it. We know it can be a time-consuming task, so that’s why we work across the major platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn), providing you with attractive and eyecatching posts. We can also go one step further and write the accompanying text - and schedule posts for you too.
Book Design
We all judge a book by its cover - whether we’re supposed to or not. That’s why it’s important to have an eye-catching design that reflects the contents of your book. We have over 15 years of experience in book design, working with some of the UK’s leading book publishers (and many independent ones too). We’re avid readers at Melvin Creative, so it’s always exciting to read a synopsis and start exploring the creative possibilities. Publications can range from traditional paperbacks to visual coffee-table books. No matter what your book is about, we have experience in a wide variety of genres: fiction and non-fiction, history, travel, sports, whisky, photography, biographies and many more.
