How do you help your clients achieve their fitness goals?

It's all about mindset and getting to know your client on a personal level. Here are some steps on how I help my clients achieve their fitness goals.

1. Finding out what motivates my clients - Why do they want to lose the weight, eat healthier or get stronger? What makes them feel empowered and in control? What do they enjoy eating or doing for exercise? It is a lot easier to stick to a workout regimen that includes bike riding if a person loves bike riding. And it is a lot harder to stick to a meal plan that includes salmon if the person hates fish. The bottom line: Find out what makes your clients feel great and use that to help devise the plans for achieving their goals.

2. Figuring out my client's personality - Generally, there are two different types of goals: process-oriented and outcome-oriented. Process-oriented goals focus on the “journey,” whereas outcome-oriented goals focus on the “finish line.” It is best to strike a balance between both types when setting goals, especially if a client is solely focused on the "finish line." Consider, for example, a client who wants to lose 20 pounds. He is so focused on the scale that if it doesn’t move in a week, he will quit. The key here is to pair the outcome goal with a process-oriented goal. In this case, perhaps it is to eat vegetables at lunch and dinner five days a week. So even though the scale didn’t move one week, his nutrition improved. The key is to focus on the positive.

3. Setting Specific, Measurable, Action-Oriented, Realistic, and Time-Bound (S.M.A.R.T) goals - By setting smart goals, the client defines and outlines a goal. For example: A client says, “I want to get stronger.” What do you mean by getting stronger? Increase bench press, do 5 pull-ups or squat body weight? Instead, a client could make the following SMART goal: “I want to do 5 consecutive pull-ups within the next three months” That’s a Specific, Measurable, Action-Oriented, Realistic and Time-bound goal.

What’s the secret to getting the body of your dreams?

Research shows that it takes between 18-224 days to make a new behavior an ingrained habit, indicating a considerable variation based on the individual. Don't let this distraught you! First, the secret starts with the mindset by finding your intrinsic motivations for your pursuit of health and wellness. Second, you need a support system via a family member, spouse, buddy, or a fitness professional. The person(s) help keep one accountable on their journey and research has shown the validity of influence of a support system on behavior change. Lastly, it's all about consistency, abs, bigger arms, and toned legs are not made overnight. "Repetition breeds familiarity, familiarity breeds confidence, confidence breeds success."- Stanley H. Kaplan

What do you love most about your job?

I genuinely love to guide and educate others on their fitness journey. The online fitness community has been saturated with many "quick-fixes" and "bro-science" content. It's an amazing and gratifying feeling to see the growth of an individual whether mentally, physically, and emotionally. Wellness is the whole body.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I wanted a better work life balance. Working for corporate/commercial gyms, your hours consist of many early morning and late evenings with minimal breaks between sessions. I started feeling burnt out as well as my own health starting to take toll. Going out on me own means I can do what I love in my own way. I wish to challenge and discipline myself by running my own fitness business. Owning your own business requires a level of creativity that helps you uncover innovative and cost-effective ways to showcase and market your product. And if you have an idea you want to try, you can run with it without having to seek permission. I wish to be an inspiration for others who want start a fulfilling career in the fitness industry. My achievements in academics further inspired me to learn the business side of the fitness industry.

Why should our clients choose you?

As a teenager, the years of continuously struggling to manage my weight and make healthy lifestyle choices affected my quality of life, as I slowly developed chronic back pain. Consequently, I committed to improving my well-being by consuming nutrient dense foods, limiting sugary and highly processed foods, and engaging in daily physical activity. The challenges that I faced throughout this experience sparked my interest in pursuing kinesiology and helping others achieve healthy lifestyles. I believe I can empathize with those who are struggling in their fitness journey. The key is small steps and small victories that lead to a healthy lifestyle.
