Getting your insurance to pay for nutrition visits

Insurance coverage for nutrition counseling depends on your plan type and diagnosis. Here's how to maximize your benefits in Arizona:

Step 1: Check if you have a covered condition
Call your insurance and ask if 'Medical Nutrition Therapy' or 'dietitian services' are covered. Mention your specific condition (diabetes, kidney disease, eating disorder, etc.).

Step 2: Get a referral
Most plans require a referral or prescription from your doctor. Ask for a referral to a 'Registered Dietitian for Medical Nutrition Therapy' and make sure they include your diagnosis code.

Step 3: Find an in-network provider
Insurance pays more (or only) for in-network dietitians. When you submit your request on Bark, add your insurance provider to your requirements so you'll only hear from nutritionists who accept your plan. If your top choice is out-of-network, some plans still offer partial reimbursement.

Step 4: Verify benefits
Before your first appointment, confirm:

  • How many visits are covered per year

  • Your copay or coinsurance amount

  • Whether prior authorization is needed

  • If telehealth visits are covered the same as in-person

No coverage? You can still use HSA/FSA funds for nutrition counseling. Ask about payment plans or sliding scale fees.

How much does a nutritionist cost in Phoenix, AZ?

Based upon the latest Bark data, market research and regional estimates, the average monthly cost for nutrition counseling in Arizona is approximately $135. Keep in mind that while rates in Phoenix are competitive, specialized counseling (like eating disorder treatment or medical nutrition therapy) may carry a higher premium. Many insurance plans cover registered dietitian visits. The national average is around $135 per month, with costs varying based on session frequency, credentials, and your specific nutrition needs.

Estimated investment by payment structure based on your location:

  • Monthly subscription (4 sessions): $122 - $155

  • Single session (60-90 min initial): $122 - $162

  • Follow-up session (30-45 min): $74 - $101

  • 6-session package: $554 - $702

  • 3-month program: $365 - $446

With insurance: Most covered visits have a copay of $15-50 per session instead of the full rate.

The value of professional nutrition counseling

Hiring a registered dietitian is an investment in your long-term health. Beyond just telling you what to eat, a nutrition professional in Phoenix teaches you how food affects your body, helping you build habits that prevent chronic disease and improve quality of life for years to come.

Important credentials to verify

Don't be afraid to ask about a professional's background. Credentialed dietitians hold RD or RDN credentials from the Commission on Dietetic Registration and must maintain continuing education. These credentials ensure they follow evidence-based practices and can provide Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT). Note: The term 'nutritionist' is not regulated in most states, so always verify credentials.

Ways to reduce your nutrition counseling costs

If you're on a budget, start by maximizing insurance benefits—get a referral from your doctor if needed for covered conditions. Ask about package pricing, which often reduces the per-session rate. Virtual nutrition counseling is typically 15-25% less expensive than in-office visits. Some dietitians offer lower-cost initial consultations or free discovery calls to ensure you're a good fit before committing.

How important is a healthy diet to someone’s health and wellbeing?

Of course as most people would guess its extremely critical, we become the food(s) we eat. The less healthy a individual diet is can usually be felt.

What do you love most about your job?

I love giving people the tools they need to live a healthier more full life. I love the discussion with a client who was able to implement a technique we discussed the week prior to perform better. I love the smile of a person who is finally able to get through a body motion with which they previously have struggled. Simply put I love passing on knowledge to those who need it.

What inspired you to start your own business?

Well I've always wanted to and when the pandemic started and I saw how many people were truly affected by the lack of nutrition advice, exercise and just ways to improve and protect their health I knew this was the appropriate time.

Why should our clients choose you?

Clients should choose whoever they feel is the best fit for them. It is a personal journey and if you are uncertain about the fit with Designer Health Fitness, we will refer you to the correct person or group(s).

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

Absolutely! We have developed both a cell phone app and YouTube channel, both called Designer Health & Fitness (DHF). The cellular app allows you to record your nutrition and/or receive guided workout, meal plans onto your phone. While the YouTube channel has multiple different exercise routines, circuits and warm-ups for different backgrounds and levels (still expanding out channel slowly).

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

Originally when Covid-19 began I wanted to make sure I could fully service my clients while keeping them safe. The best measures have been virtual/remote training, I do still work in person with a few clients. When working in-person both I and my client (if indoors) must wear a mask, I regularly try to keep my distance and hands off as much as possible while making sure my clients are still safe. In addition the gym and equipment is regularly disinfected after AND before each session.
