Does insurance cover nutritionist visits in Washington?

Most major insurance plans cover registered dietitian visits for medical conditions. In Washington, common providers like Blue Cross Blue Shield, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Cigna, and Humana typically include nutrition counseling as a covered benefit.

What you need for coverage:

  • A referral from your doctor (required by most plans)

  • A diagnosis code for a covered condition (diabetes, obesity with BMI >30, eating disorders, kidney disease, pregnancy-related nutrition, GI disorders, cardiovascular disease)

  • Appointments with a Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN), not just a 'nutritionist'

  • Some plans require in-network providers

Typical coverage:

  • 3-6 visits per year for most conditions

  • Up to 10 visits per year for diabetes

  • Unlimited visits for eating disorder treatment (with prior authorization)

  • Prenatal nutrition often covered as preventive care

Check with your insurance provider or ask your nutritionist's office to verify your specific coverage. Many dietitians will check benefits before your first appointment.

Is a nutritionist worth the cost?

In a busy area like Seattle, the biggest benefit is personalized, medical-grade advice. You aren't just paying for meal plans—you're paying for a professional who understands your health conditions, reads your lab work, and creates strategies that work with your real life, not against it.

What credentials and qualifications should I look for?

A qualified nutrition professional should be a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). These credentials require a bachelor's degree (minimum), supervised practice hours, passing a national exam, and ongoing continuing education. Look for additional certifications like CEDRD (eating disorders), CSSD (sports nutrition), CDE/CDCES (diabetes), or CSP (pediatrics) based on your needs. In Washington, verify state licensing requirements as well.

How to find an affordable nutritionist in Seattle

To keep costs down, check your insurance first—many plans now cover registered dietitian visits for conditions like diabetes, obesity, eating disorders, and kidney disease. If your plan doesn't cover nutrition counseling, ask about sliding scale fees, payment plans, or group nutrition classes. Virtual appointments are often more affordable than in-person sessions.

How important is a healthy diet to someone’s health and wellbeing?

Healthy eating is critical! Most clients come to me feeling heavy, sluggish, tired, and achy. Once they change their eating patterns, they are blown away by how much more energized they feel, but also more focused, grounded, with better digestion, and very importantly, a more harmonious relationship with food.

What do you love most about your job?

That moment when my clients realize that eating healthy is much easier than they thought. When they understand that they don’t need more will-power or painful daily routines to achieve wellness.

What inspired you to start your own business?

For many years, I was in a constant battle with myself, trying to break out of the yoyo dieting and emotional eating. Once I finally came up with a system that got me to a happy and healthy body, I realized that a lot of people are struggling with the same issues I used to deal with. I knew I could help them. So I went back to school, acquired 3 coaching certifications, and 4 specialties within health, wellness, behavioral change, and coaching, and opened my own practice.

Why should our clients choose you?

I have a unique approach to nutrition, which is based on the idea that food-lovers deserve wellness without sacrifice. My methodology is called Allon-Z. It combines nutrition science and physiology together with the French mindset towards food and lifestyle - because I’m French :)

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

Yes, I provide all my services virtually via Zoom (or over the phone if clients prefer it this way)

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

When COVID hit, I moved from a physical practice to virtual coaching only. I was initially planning on going back to seeing clients in person after COVID, but most of my clients actually prefer to avoid the commute, so I have decided to keep my services online. This way, I can serve people all over the United States, and in other countries as well.
