This is actually a "trick question". The main reason is that there are some crowds who love to dance and the DJ simply acts to enhance the energy that exists within the social crowd and then, there are crowds that are more conservative and might enjoy a more social atmosphere with slow dances and great "sing a long" songs (instead of full dance floor dancing). And then, there are also crowds that love to line dance and want a very interactive DJ. There are all very different aspects and require a flexible, professional and experienced DJ to know the difference and morph into that personality needed to make it happen.
A great DJ understands that they ARE NOT the center of attention - The Bride & Groom are! A DJ should only be noticed when making announcements and specifying specific points of activity or interest as designed by / with the clients. A good/professional DJ will READ THE CROWD and facilitate the appropriate music to cater to the VIBE, not force it. Ever been to a wedding where the DJ is on the mic constantly yelling "come on, let's get on the dance floor" or worse - The DJ who jumps out on the dance floor to "lead the dances"... Maybe for some but not for the clients I work with.
"Boutique"..... I'm not a multi-op company. I'm an individual. You email/call me, you get ME. I MEET YOU, I DJ YOUR WEDDING. It's a very personal "hand holding" process from beginning to end. During the wedding, I'm as passionate about the special day as you! I'm detail oriented, I'm a great communicator with your other wedding vendors, and I listen more than I speak! I am "laid back" to a point. I do not want to be the shinning point at your wedding. If you need me to help you get the energy up and create a dance floor, I'm more than happy to elevate to that level and make it happen! It's all about YOU and what YOU WANT!

I may be an individual, however, I am networked and associated with several reputable companies whom I also consult and if there is ever the unfortunate situation that I, personally, cannot be at your wedding, that I have appropriate coverage to ensure your wedding entertainment is done to your satisfaction.
Social interaction! I LOVE WEDDINGS! To keep loving them, I only accept a maximum of 2 weddings per month. This keeps it fresh, exciting and for the client, they're getting someone who truly loves their special day and everything about it. Not a DJ who "goes through the motions" almost like they're in "auto pilot" (a term I've actually heard other DJs use when doing weddings - not good!).
Weddings are usually held at amazing venues / locations that are picturesque. The food is always amazing and the people are having the time of their lives. I get to live "my wedding" every time I'm the DJ of someone else's. Still brings tears to my eyes.
I tried working for other people. Not so good at being an employee. Not saying that I'm better - just that I have a specific method of doing things that work for me. So far, no complaints from my clients :-)
Clients shouldn't CHOOSE ME... They should INTERVIEW ME... I'm not going to work for everyone and I can't do every wedding. What will happen though, is through the interview process, we (myself and the potential client) will see if we are a good match for the wedding format & vision.
There are some cases that I'm not the right fit. In those cases, I am happy to refer the potential wedding couple to another entertainer who would better fit their specific needs. In other cases, everything feels right and we make a good fit for the perfect wedding!
