Angela Kelly Smith

I am branding specialist and Squarespace website designer. I am also a visual artist and podcaster. I create beautiful, strategically-designed Squarespace websites for sole proprietors and podcasters who want to attract more ideal clients and listeners. I have a background as a marketing consultant and business and life coach. While the vast majority of my clients have been sole proprietors or small-business owners, my largest clients were Rice University Graduate School of Business and IDENTIGENE, the Houston-based DNA-testing company. I create customized Squarespace websites based on your brand, using your brand color palette and using complementary fonts. I perform SEO keyword and phrase research and do the SEO settings before the website goes live. I make sure the site is mobile-responsive and will add specific code to make any necessary adjustments.

What do you love most about your job?

I love being able to help people reach their goals. I've worked as a marketing consultant and a Mentor Coach, and both involve helping people figure out what they most want and how to get there. There's not much better than supporting other people in reaching their personal and professional goals.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I have always worked for myself because I love the freedom it gives me and because I love the variety of projects I get to work on. I like setting my own hours, working whenever I need to in order to get a job done. Working for myself also gives me more time with my kids and to follow my other passions, such as podcasting and learning different languages.

Why should our clients choose you?

I am totally committed to getting my work done well and on schedule. I communicate well and quickly with my clients. I have a varied background and bring many skills to my clients that are useful in editing and website creation. You might not expect anthropology to help, but it does! That and my background as a Mentor Coach give me better insight into what makes people tick. I am a professional artist and have a master's in communication. As such, I bring both a creative and an analytical perspective to the work I do. You get all of my brain when you work with me.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

All of my services are done remotely. If you are in the Pittsburgh region, I am happy to meet with you in person if you prefer.

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

Working remotely keeps us safe! But, if we meet in person, outdoors is ideal. If we meet indoors, I wear a mask until we’re at a table in a restaurant.

What makes a great website?

A great website is about both aesthetics and functional design. In fact, more visitors (48%) leave a website due to poor functionality than they do due to poor aesthetics (38%).

A great website needs to make a strong first impression within 10 seconds. That means letting your visitor know right away who you are, what you do, whom you do it for, and how you help them. And you can't tell this to them in lots of text! Ten seconds isn't enough time to read more than a couple of sentences. You have to get this across in your logo, you banner image, your headline, one sentence, and the general layout of your homepage. That's it!

And a great website has to keep its visitors as long as possible. That means having a simple layout, clear navigation, mobile responsiveness, and lots of awesome content that's easy to find. Telling visitors exactly where to go with a call-to-action really helps with that!

What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?

I ask my clients about their goals for their website. This is key to knowing how to organize their content and their calls-to-action. Should their newsletter signup go up top, or their services? Or maybe their blog?

How do they want their website to feel? Calming, luxurious, exciting, professional/stable, funky? Something else?

What do they most want visitors to know about them from their website? What do they want their website to say about them? This has to do with their brand. What is their brand personality? This will dictate the style and feeling of the website.
