What makes a great website?

There's no single answer to this and not enough area here to list them, let alone discuss them. What makes a GR8 website changes over time and technology - what was GR8 15 years ago, is different from today and what will be GR8 in 10 years AND is relative to who's asking, owner or user.

If the latter, then what user? Grandma/pa at the elder care center, health-conscious urban athletes; members of the local dog scout troop (yes there is such a thing); sight-impaired and/or colour-blind users; big screen desktop users w/ massive amounts of bandwidth; mobile users on WiFi or tomorrow's VR users; humans or search bots; and/or domestic or international language speakers.

Is "...great" defined as all-inclusive (ie 'works' [operates the same] on every browser, every platform, every device, every screensize, all bandwidths, hardwired and wireless) or specific criteria.

From the owner's perspective, does it ultimately meet their goals/objectives? But that too is relative to if the owner goal is to share information freely or monitize the site in some way (whether a NPO seeking donations/volunteers, bricks/mortar business wanting to drive foot traffic or the online entrepreneur building e-commerce channels) which ideally promotes the brand and costs less to create/maintain than it generates short or long-term.

From the users' perspective, does it meet their goals/objectives (not necessarily the same as the owners')? ie solve a need, answer a question, allow them to accomplish what they want, quickly and easily.

How we get there - eye-candy (animated penguins), mobile-responsiveness, fast-loading, ease of navigation, bot searchability (SEO), & superb content all contribute but are ultimately relative to "Does it satisfy both my audiences' and my goals?"

Clearly defining the goals will define the yardstick used to measure its greatness - which will be different for each person answering and the point from which they are looking. Our role is to ferret that information out and develop a solution accordingly.

What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?

We have a brief design questionnaire we use, but as you might guess from the previous response, the primary questions relate to the site owner's business structure, product/services, goals, and customer makeup.

What inspired you to start your own business?

IFI was created by accident and forged in chaos. Chaos that is often described as ‘the edge of the place where creativity lies’.

In the 80's, there were many typesetters, but very few involved in electronic publishing; there were numerous high-end A/V communication mediums, but few offering affordable presentation and interactive media options. Word spread as we emerged as a viable option to an ever-changing and expanding business need for better return on marketing investment.

Why should our clients choose you?

We are… web designers, web developers, print designers, graphic illustrators, programmers, database developers, marketing strategists, server managers, security freaks, social media mavens, search specialists, brain tattooists, imagineers, communicators. We are your storyteller. We are all about telling your story to your audience with an eye on cost effectiveness and an ROI for you.

What do you love most about your job?

Our favorite clients are those with no strong opinions, immense wealth and well-developed submissive personalities. However, this group seems to be notoriously shy – so we endeavor to have fun with ALL of our clients… even if you don’t fit this target profile.
