I used to think that I did a decent job with my taxes. Â They would get done in steps, actually. Â Step 1: Gather my documents. Â Step 2: Realize that April 15th was fast approaching. Â Step 3: Panic. Â Step 4: Download tax software. Â Step 5: Fill in the blanks. Â Step 6: Be confused and frustrated. Â Step 7: Cross my fingers. Â Step 8: Finish the forms. Â Step 9: e-file. Â Step 10: Pay, or wait for a check.I did this for the past 5 years and for the most part, it was fine. Â That is, until I received a letter in the mail early this year (2011) from the Commonwealth of Virginia about my 2007 taxes. Â Since then, I've been scared of The Government, and decided that I'd get my taxes done by a professional. Â I'm so glad I did. I picked The Original Tax Center because of their location, and because they are a small business that has been around since 1945. Â The place looks it too - it is the most unsexy place in DC. Â But you're not going to base a tax center by its looks right? Â I called them for an appointment and was able to get one within a week. Â The receptionist was incredibly nice, as was my tax preparer, Rich. Â It took him less than an hour to put all of my forms into his tax software and got me a really great refund. Â And right when I thought he was done, he wanted to hang on to them for a bit longer 'cause he wanted to double check something. Â He said he'd give me a call, and sure enough, about half an hour later, he called to tell me he found me even more money. Â Nice!Yes, the clientele are more my parents' age. Â And yes, I saw the receptionist use a typewriter at some point. Â But they got the job done and then some - and that's 5 stars in my book.

Being an access to information so clients can feel as though they are capable and in control.
My life took a turn when I became full time elder caregiver. I came to understand the value of financial knowledge and opportunity. I decided not to re-enter the corporate world, and instead bring the valuable knowledge of that professional level to people striving to make their own way.
Our times are requiring individuals to establish their own way, developing their own businesses and so many of us are not prepared for the administration of the effort. It will be important to develop relationships with specialists that understand where you are and care about your growth. No one is born knowing this and not every specialist can do it all. Good ones know where you can go, valuable ones can help you devise or advise you in a plan for action.
I do not judge. I have seen enough and have been all over the map myself. I know, I understand and, as long as my client is interested in using taxation as a tool to function in this society, I am willing to facilitate Tax Literacy.
On the other hand I appreciate clients who are well organized and want to minimize risk of issues. I meet my clients where they are.
Definitely. It will require effort on your part.
Due to the proliferation of ID theft and cyber crime, the IRS and other agencies are developing systems that will require you taking more responsibility. In 2021, the Service is setting the expectation for a lot of disruption.
One initiative is to create an ID.me account (at IRS.gov) for as many as possible. Working remotely, documents will have to be uploaded to a secure file exchange and there will have to be an exchange of information to identify you with the IRS.
I do not work with customers across a desk. If local I arrange for document exchange, if remote secure file drops and video exchanges are required.
