What do you love most about your job?

I love being able to help people in their time of need. A lot of people don't know what a speech language pathologist is or what we do, until they need one. I love helping my clients and their families gain better incite into what they are experiencing. It is my pleasure to provide the appropriate services needed to ease what they are experiencing.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I wanted to provide speech therapy services in a convenient way for clients. Teletherapy allows clients with the flexibility of having their speech therapy sessions in the comfort of their homes or on the go.

Why should our clients choose you?

As a doctor of speech language pathology, I have experience working in skilled nursing facilities, assisted living facilities, independent living facilities, hospital, home health, and telehealth settings. I have also served as a travel speech language pathologist. Throughout my career, I have gained an invaluable set of clinical skills, earned and maintained multiple certifications and am constantly learning to remain current.

Speech therapy is my passion and I absolutely love what I do. My friendly and welcoming spirit has proved beneficial when connecting with clients and their families. I consider it an honor to bring serenity to lives of my clients.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

Yes. Serenity Speech Therapy is a telepractice company, serving seven different states:
North Carolina
California
Virginia
Florida
Georgia
Indiana
Massachusetts

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

Serenity Speech Therapy has always been a teletherapy company. Our one exception is for SpeechEasy clients. When clients are seen in person, all recommended precautions are taken. Masks are worn, hand washing and/or sanitizing are available, and surfaces are wiped down between clients.

Dea is a speech pathologist. I am a 75-year-old guitar player. When I discovered Dea, I was looking for a singer who taught voice. At first, I wasn’t at all sure that Dea was the right choice, partly because her primary expertise was voice health, not singing technique, and partly because all our sessions would be by teleconference. As it turned out, neither was a problem. Dea was exactly who I needed. Dea has deep expertise in voice mechanics, including those specific to the singing voice (and, as it happened, has worked with a number of high-level singers). Right off, she began teaching me the mechanics of voice production. When I finally sang for her, she identified several mechanical issues, poor muscle habits she said, explained them to me and put together a plan to address them. Every session was interesting and each one provided me with insight into what was or wasn’t happening with my voice when singing. She taught me throat and larynx relaxation techniques, voice warm-up exercises, low and high note extensions, vocal cord exercises, breathing exercises, posture improvement and more, always with explanations as to why what she was telling me was important. I had thought one improved one’s singing thought sound -- listening to oneself, hearing weakness and learning to strengthen them. While obviously sound is important, Dea emphasized was on learning to feel the location of my singing voice ("hold this sound and tell me where you feel it; now move that feeling forward, now backward; now try this sound . . .”). The overall result of this training was a more relaxed singing voice, better tone and greater projection-- and, in my case, a substantial increase in confidence. In sum, Dea is always positive, encouraging, completely non-critical and a delight to work with. I couldn't be more pleased with the results of my sessions with her and cannot recommend her highly enough.
