David's coaching approach is extremely organized, methodical, and rooted in science. He provides the outline to his nine-step framework on day one and every session builds upon the previous. Moreover, his approach is not one size fits all. Rather, it accounts for client needs and their comfort level. If you want to move at a slower pace, you can, or you may proceed at a faster rate. Additionally, his approach is flexible enough to easily pivot if needed. I know what it feels like to be consumed at work, to work with a frustrated team in a tough environment with toxic leadership who are not people focused, to not have time for yourself, and to be too drained during the weekend to make time for the people that matter the most to you. For the first 9 years of federal service I served in the United States Army, 24/7 hooah! The remainder of my career was at the Pentagon. For years, I gave 150% of myself to work, lost sleep, and just did not feel fulfilled even though my team and I were hitting our goals. I went to bed at 8 pm every night just because I knew I would not sleep well and I had to get up at 4 am, every work day! The euphoria of much needed vacations quickly evaporated the first day back at work.
The turnaround came for me while attending a leadership course in 2010 when I took the Clifton StrengthsFinder Assessment based on the book, The Extraordinary Leader. The premise of the author was if you focused on developing into strengths just two of your top five natural talents and abilities, you would be seen as an extraordinary leader. After taking the assessment I found out my top five talent themes and immediately went to work on intentionally investing in myself to turn all five talents into strengths. I wasn’t an expert in the leadership development field at the time, but I wanted to be.
Taking the assessment and putting my custom-tailored Clifton StrengthsFinder action plan into place changed my life! I realized that I loved to tackle any project or program that was good and make it great. I had a track record of doing that in my early years of service in the United States Army.
My number one strength is Maximizer – people strong in the Maximizer theme focus on strengths as a way to stimulate personal and group excellence. They seek to transform something strong into something superb. There was greatness in me just waiting to be discovered and cultivated.
I found out in 2010 I actually had naturally occurring tremendous assets. I had taken many other “personality tests,” but nothing came close to describing me the way StrengthsFinder assessment did. Reading the results of the personalized Insights Report was eerie. It actually described me better than I knew myself at the time. I am now a Clifton-certified Strengths Coach with over 700 coaching hours.
Today, I’ve grown and changed, and spent the last eight years focused not only on my own leadership development, but developing all levels of leaders, teams, and individuals as well. Who would have thought in 2010 that I would be overseeing a leadership academy?! Oh, by the way, I developed the concept for the leadership academy and personally taught the curriculum that would transform people’s lives and it has – over 200 attendees. And, I received the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Civilian Service in 2015 for my efforts. The biggest compliment I receive from my program graduates is how the program not only improved their professional life but their personal life as well. Relationships with those who mattered most to them significantly improved and they had more balance. They realized there was no one like them in all the world and that if they focused on their unique strengths and abilities they could win at the game of life.
Now, I’m more excited than ever because I’ve retired from the federal government at an early age with lots of energy and passion and can devote more time to my husband Tom, my daughter Danielle, recently married to my son-in-law Kevin, and to enriching the lives of others by sharing what I’ve learned and love – how to be an effective leader who is actually living one’s legacy with more balance in all aspects of life.
