Contemporary ESOL

One lesson/wk. @$100/hr.; Two or more lessons/wk. @$75/hr. I tutor and teach English to Speakers of Other Languages by creating customized lessons that help improve speaking and writing skills. The lessons are designed to be interactive, fun, and tailored to my students' interests and goals. Using an approach that involves teaching reading and listening skills as well, students can consolidate their learning. After determining your English level, your goals, and your interests, I deliver contemporary content (videos, articles, texts, cartoons) to you that we will talk (or write) about and include vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation aids together in lessons so that your English develops in a multi-dimensional way. As a conversation partner or writing coach, I encourage clients to feel free and make mistakes, since the environment that creates, puts students on the best path to learning. Your ability to speak and/or write about what matters to you is always important to me. With a master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) from Hunter College and eleven years of tutoring and teaching experience, I welcome you to join me to improve your English one lesson at a time. I go about my work patiently, with compassion and a sense of humor, mindful that the ultimate goal of language teaching is to foster independent learning. You will find me to be warm, attentive, and quick to ascertain where you need help, but not judgmental. Right now, because of the ongoing pandemic, I am working remotely to accommodate you. With three years of experience tutoring and teaching online, I can commit to making your time spent in online lessons effective and enjoyable. Please see below for lesson pricing: Fee for one lesson/week: $100.00/hour (includes materials); Fee for two or more lessons/week: $75.00/hour (includes materials)

What do you love most about your job?

I enjoy learning about students to determine their needs and wants so I can create lesson materials that help them meet their language learning goals in an enjoyable way. It is a pleasure for me to dig into a topic with a student who is genuinely curious and enthusiastic about it and in improving his/her English to be able to discuss it more completely. I also like helping students to appreciate English idioms and fixed expressions because they are so necessary for speaking English and to analyze grammar and vocabulary so they can better understand what they hear and read along the way to becoming better speakers. Because I have spent time improving my own speaking and writing, I am compassionate and patient when it comes to helping others to write and speak more easily and confidently.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I wanted to have a way to coach and inspire students apart from meeting them in front of a classroom or in an institutional setting (though I do enjoy that too). Having a business where I can become acquainted with students one on one is a wonderful way for me to share my enthusiasm for English and to join students in exchanging ideas and sharing tips to make the learning process easier. Tutoring allows me to to tailor material specifically to the individual I am working with, something which is not possible when teaching a group of students in a classroom setting.

Why should our clients choose you?

I am a warm and patient teacher who keeps students' interests and goals front and center. Though my education has provided me with the tools for teaching English for many purposes, i.e., business, academics and socialization, I have a keen interest in helping students learn the English they can really use to better their lives. With a wide-ranging sense of humor, I enjoy making students laugh when I can; learning accomplished through laughter seems to stick.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

During the ongoing pandemic, I am giving lessons remotely. I have lots of practice at this since I spent the last two years in graduate school teaching online. I can use Zoom to meet with you or, if you prefer, we can use another platform altogether. I like Zoom on account of its functionality: I can share videos, pictures, readings, and exercises as well as an interactive whiteboard and pre-prepared presentations with my students. Should two or more people wish to sign up for a lesson at the same time, I would be able to accommodate them using breakout rooms.

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

Because of the infectious nature of the Omicron variant of Covid-19, I have chosen to conduct my lessons online for the time being. I am hoping this can change and, am carefully staying on top of the research and reporting from sources working to understand and explain the virus.
