I just read the review of the couple who thought they had felt discrimination and won't come back to Tiger Mountain Vineyard. That's a shame. John who is the manager is a very nice and knowledgeable guy, and for the record, he wouldn't pour any Petite Manseng for me either and I have been there three times. He explained they only have a limited supply as this is a rarer grape. They cannot grow it and make wine out of it at will. In fact the last time I was there they had told me about a late frost that killed over an acre of vines. It will take ten years for that land to be productive again. I have been to many vineyards throughout GA, FL, SC, CA and I think Tiger Mtn Winery is special. In the south we are limited as to the native grapes that can grow here because of the hot humid weather. T.M. is at a 2000 ft. elevation and so is not restricted in the grapes they grow. You can find French Malbec grapes, Cabernet Franc, Viogier, and of course Petite Manseng! These are vitis vinifera french grapes that produce incredible wine. I think a true wine fan would be thrilled to think such wine can be made in GA! I do wish they had a more hospitable tasting room (It's really a warehouse.) But during the height of the season they have other facilities to make the experience more enjoyable. As to the couple feeling they were shown cheaper wine because of the race, consider that in most parts of the southeast--and I speak from experience, customers want to spend less than $20.00 a bottle on wine. You can ask a clerk anywhere wine is sold and you'll here the same. Tiger Mtn. Is a bit pricey compared with other southern wineries, so my guess is John has dealt with so much price resistance during the down economy that he pushes the lower priced wines hoping to not lose a sale. He is a very accommodating person who only want s you to get what you'll be happy with. In fact he really pushes their wine club as a way to save 20%.I still haven't tried Petite Manseng--since John wouldn't open a bottle for me, but I will shortly. I was in Byron, GA last week (a half hour south of Macon). I stopped in at Cane River Vineyard tasting room. They had T. M.'s Petite Manseng at 25% off. Why, the manager said her customers won't pay over $20.00 for wine (sound familiar) so I bought 2 bottles. Trust me, if you like wine, have learned about grapes, like a fun vineyard experience, definitely go to Tiger Mountain!
