We had dinner at Takos and Beer last night and I have to give it my highest recommendation. The Frontera Grill and Topolobampo in Chicago (both owned by celebrity chef Rick Bayless) are arguably the finest Mexican restaurants in the US. I never expected to find their equal. And I haven’t. But I did discover a rival right here in Yuma. Takos and Beer serves marvelous Mexican fare. The food is fresh, well seasoned and perfectly prepared. And the prices are quite fair. The menu is a bit limited, as one might expect from a small restaurant, and they do run out of some menu items. But what they do have is excellent. Some of the items are a bit exotic, such as octopus or manta ray tacos. But these are authentic, if not familiar, to those accustomed to Sonoran or Chihuahuan style Mexican food. But Mexico is a large country with a wide variety of cuisines. Incorporating that variety is part of what makes Rick Bayless’s Chicago restaurants special. Takos and Beer also incorporate this diversity. And the prices are much better than you’ll encounter at a Rick Bayless restaurant.
