What do you love most about your job?

What do I love most about being a photographer? I get asked this question a lot and I am always at a loss as to how to put into words that feeling I get living my life as a creator of memories.

It’s what I do and what I’ve always done. I’ve been making photographs since I was a kid, and now, all these years later, I still get the same thrill when I stumble upon a scene that steals the breath from my lungs and makes my heart race as I quickly pull my camera up to my eye. There is something so satisfying in taking whatever it is in front of me and being able frame it perfectly and, seeing it on the back of the camera or on the computer at home, saying to myself, “That’s exactly what I saw and exactly how I wanted to see it.”

Being a photographer is not a routine job. It’s not the same thing day in and out. Every time I wander the streets of the Toronto, every destination I visit, every person who enters my studio, is a different and challenging subject in their own right. And I love that. I love the process of figuring out how to make whatever I’m seeing in front of me at look amazing.

Out of all the places I’ve been, the amazing things I’ve seen, the adventures I’ve experienced, all the ups and downs and heartache and joy of my life, and all the amazing people I’ve loved with over the years, the one thread that has tied everything in my life together has been photography. The entire arc of my life has been experienced through the viewfinder of my camera. Some have said that I have missed out on the direct experience of my life by always having a camera in front of my face, but I beg to differ: experiencing life through the viewfinder has heightened my ability to see and record the sublime details of a scene that no one else sees, to see patterns and colours that ordinarily don’t get a seconds notice, and to freeze those powerful moments that define life and give it meaning, into a tangible thing that you can look back on and hold dear for the rest of your life. That is no small thing.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I think what inspired me to start my own business was undoubtedly the reason why almost all photographers eventually turn professional; since practically everyone I knew was asking me to click them - and offering to pay for my services to do it - it just made sense to formalize and legitimize what I was having fun doing anyway. The transition from “Photography Enthusiast” to “Professional Photographer” was hardly a noticeable step.

My business, Froz’n Motion Photography, is the natural evolution of an obsession that began at a very early age for me - the discovery and fascination with the art of photography. Growing up in a small town on the West coast of Canada, I always knew that I wanted to create something, that I wanted to bring what I felt inside out into the open, I just didn’t know how. I couldn’t draw to save my life and I certainly couldn’t paint or write a song or a story or a poem, but making photographs somehow made sense to me. And they mattered. I think I was 13 when I got my first camera, and honestly, you’ll never see me anywhere without one today.

Why should our clients choose you?

Choosing a photographer is a very personal thing. You have to choose someone who is skilled and experienced, of course, but also someone you really like, someone who is going to be easy to work with and who is going to get along with your family and friends (if they are shooting your wedding). You need to find someone who makes you feel comfortable in your own skin, someone with a creative vision that knocks your socks off, who can dispel your nervousness and make you look great in the final product. That’s because being photographed is one of the most intimate experiences you can have with someone you are not in a direct physical relationship with. By giving someone permission to photograph you, you are exposing yourself to a complete stranger and that’s never an easy thing to do. In fact, it actually requires a lot of guts.

The reason someone should choose me as their photographer is because I’m good at what I do. I’ve been doing it a long time and I produce excellent results, and, above all else, I absolutely love being a photographer.

Annie Leibowitz has famously said that it’s not the photographer’s job to set the client at ease, but that’s not true at all. That’s exactly what their job is. Bark clients should choose me as their photographer because I know exactly how to put them at ease and make them look more amazing than they ever dreamed possible.

And finally, I think the most important reason Bark clients should choose me to photograph them is because I am a lot of fun to work with and also because I personally position and direct all of my clients. Not a lot of photographers do.

Almost everyone I’ve ever met has confessed their fear of having no idea how to pose for the camera. And I get that. As the day of your shoot draws nearer, trying to imagine what you are going to do once you arrive in the studio can be utterly terrifying. But it doesn’t have to be like that. I’ve always said that your job as my subject is to focus all your energy on looking amazing. My job as your photographer is to capture all that amazingness with my camera. And to do that, all I do is take responsibility for your posing. My personal strength as a photographer lies in my ability to position you in a way that is both flattering and comfortable. “Turn your head a little to the left and drop your focus,” “Try putting your arm there,” “Bend your front knee and come up on your toes.” These are the kinds of direction you will hear throughout your session. My approach is to work with you to gently draw out of you the most perfect version of you possible. And the cool thing is, it doesn’t matter if you can’t pose! It doesn’t even matter what you look like or if you’ve never had a professional photo taken in your entire life! Because I have worked with all ages and body types - from great grandmothers to newborn babies and every shape and size in between. And I make them all look amazing.

That’s why you should choose me as your photographer.
