Beaches Reading Clinic Inc.

Beaches Reading Clinic was started as a need to support my first daughter who was diagnosed with Dyslexia, Dysgraphia & Dysclaculia in late Gr. 2, in 2014 & Central Auditory Processing (2018). Along side her younger sister (now 12) with the exact diagnosis as her older sister (now 16). I spent countless hours researching, learning and understanding more about Dyslexia in order to find a effective solution to support my oldest daughter at the time. As a Certified, Elementary/Secondary teacher (with Dyslexia myself) with the TDSB for 17 years (I resigned in 2019) & my heart broke knowing that my daughter would not receive access to her basic human right, to become literate in our school system. My youngest daughter, when in Grade 3 was also diagnosed in October of 2017 with Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia. Both of my daughter's along with myself were diagnosed with Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD)., a very, very common comorbidity of dyslexia. ADD/ADHD & ASD are also very common comorbitites of Dyslexia. We exclusivley use the Barton Reading & Spelling System - https://bartonreading.com/ PREREQUISITES A Barton student must: 1. Be at least 5 years old and in kindergarten 2. Can speak and comprehend spoken English 3. Have an IQ of 70 or higher 4. Struggles with spelling when writing stories and cannot easily sound out unknown words when reading. 5. Can pass our Student Screen: https://bartonreading.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Student_Screen_04_OV_Video.pdf COMMITMENT & ATTENDANCE The Barton System requires a serious commitment. The attendance policy is in place to ensure that each student meets the minimum requirement of 2 hours/week for 12 months for success. Unavoidable missed sessions will be made up or can be banked for summer or the following year school year. “Once a week is not enough. Do not start the Barton System if you can only tutor once a week. That is not frequent or intense enough for it “to stick.” Susan Barton We must provide at least 2 hours of one-on-one tutoring each week. A tutoring session should not last for more than an hour. So that means we must provide at least two tutoring sessions a week. (Exceptions will be made for older students who can do a 2-hour session/week as well as extenuating circumstances such as illness and family vacations– BRC Policy). When your family has made a commitment to the Barton System, you essentially cross of their calendar during those days & times. Please try your very best to not schedule other things during your time. To ensure your child fully benefits from the Barton System, the times we have scheduled weekly are critical to your child’s success. At Beaches Reading Clinic, we are compassionate & caring teachers, educators, graduates and undergrads who use the Barton System to help students of all ages to be successful in reading, writing and spelling. Bright children who struggle with reading, spelling and writing could be suffering with dyslexia & dysgraphia. It is very puzzling to parents because these children are often artistic, athletic, articulate and very intelligent young people. We close a child’s reading & spelling gap and boost their confidence and accentuate their strengths. We know that children should be screened for Dyslexia in kindergarten. We know that all primary age school children deserve Best Practice evidence-based reading instruction, methods which were studied and laid out in the US National Read Panel Report of 2000. We know when some children fail to read even after using scientifically tested teaching methods, these children need to be quickly identified and provided with systematic and explicit structured literacy-based reading instruction as promoted by the International Dyslexia Association.

What do you love most about your job?

Helping kids with dyslexia or other learning differences learn how to genuinely read & spell! For the past 30 plus years our education system in Ontario/Canada has not provided Reading & Spelling instruction based on the Science of Reading. At Beaches Reading Clinic, we have been for over 7 years!

What inspired you to start your own business?

Beaches Reading Clinic began as an outcome of my experience supporting my own daughter who was diagnosed with Dyslexia, Dysgraphia & Dysclaculia in late Gr. 2, in 2014. I spent countless hours researching, learning and understanding more about Dyslexia in order to find an effective solution to support her. She is now 16, she can read and spell like a rock star after completing Level 10 in Grade 8! She is having another, very successful year in Grade 10 in the Birchmount Elite Athlete Program!

Why should our clients choose you?

TESTIMONIALS
So thankful for the progress our daughter is making thanks to The Beaches Reading Clinic. Monica is a wonderful tutor and highly recommend her.

Monica, thank you very much for tutoring Kynan as he passes Level 3. We are very proud and recognize it is largely your persistence and coaching him that has helped him achieve this. We look forward to more time with this program. Thanks again.
-Hayden & Jackie

Dear Monica,
I want you to know that I am *very* sad to write this email! Xavi loves coming to see you, which I never, ever thought I would say with regards to reading practice for him. You clearly have a very special ability to foster meaningful and important relationships with children, and also to encourage them to *want* to learn – Xavi’s always so happy when he comes out of sessions with you. (And I don’t think it’s just because of the dogs). You have made a *world* of difference to our family for these short months; it has been a challenging year, to say the least, and you have been one of the only bright spots in Xavi’s learning. (When he visited his new school yesterday, the principal asked him if he liked learning; he said he didn’t like it at school and that he only liked it with his “English teacher” – that’s you).
-Jeri E

Henry was talking to my mom on the phone, and he asked her if he could read some of his story to her! this is HUGE. His sister was even there. He has been soooooo shy for anyone but my husband and I to hear him work on reading. His confidence is growing so beautifully. I can't thank you enough & thank you so much for the reassurance and for all of your hard work with him. It amazes me how he looks forward to work on his reading with you, when before we started it was a battle getting him to school or to do anything literacy related. I am nervous for Gr.2 because he has really developed such confidence in his ability to learn but the other kids are learning this stuff much faster and I'm nervous he's going to slide back into thinking he's dumb. I'm so grateful we found our way to you.

Hi Monica,
Wanted to share how great our experience has been with the Beaches Reading Clinic. When Kynan first started he hated reading and avoided it at all costs. At fist he was very negative about attending the tutoring classes and fought tooth and nail NOT to go. But we persevered and quickly found that he began enjoying his time with you at his tutoring classes and talked about his experiences and learnings there. He also began to read. At his own will be began to read street signs, menus, and news bulletins on the television. We were amazed, as was he. He found a novel series at the school library that he enjoyed reading and took great pride in finishing each chapter. I knew we had truly turned a corner when he opened his computer and willingly typed a poem in order to complete his homework one night. He has new found pride in his reading ability. It was wonderful to watch as a parent. He is now on level 4 and we look forward to him completing this level and subsequent levels thereafter.
Thank you for all you do for Kynan. You are making a big difference in his life.

Hi Monica!
I wanted to tell you again how much he enjoys coming to see you. It’s so funny, I asked him how he liked seeing his O-G lady at school, and he was like, “Yeah, she’s ok, as long as I can still see Monica.” I’m not entirely sure about that logic, but I thought it was cute. I’m so pleased at how much progress he’s making with you. Thank you so much for your flexibility!
ps: We have decided to stop working with the O-G lady at school - Xavi just really isn't enjoying it. AND, he keeps chanting ALL THE TIME "Monica is the best! Monica is the best!" ;)

My son K.J. is absolutely doing wonderful with Ben’s instruction. I noticeda difference immediately and this week K.J. has said he wishes he could go to your school everyday. Last night for the first time ever he said he wants to show me his reading. How amazing!
-Carla

Hi Monica - congrats on the coverage. You and the clinic presented really well. Very caring, very competent, but a clinic that addresses the needs with a caring human touch. That is I think your greatest strength. Supporting this population of learners requires considerable understanding training, but most importantly empathy and caring, which you do in spades.
Jay (teacher) & former tutor @ the Clinic

Just wanted to take a second to say how happy we are with Maria T. She is amazing with her! She has so much patience with her and is making the sessions enjoyable for Stella. She encourages her and provides her feedback throughout the session. Thank you for the great match!
-Jana

Jimmy has worked incredibly hard and had some big gains over the past year - all thanks to you Monica, and we can't thank you enough :) Thank you again for all the incredible work you have done with Jimmy to get him to this point. He really took to you and made incredible progress.
-Paul & Meagan

David wanted me to let you know that he finished the entire Captain Underpants book. He read it to me. He’s doing so well with his reading and I’m so happy about it. Ben’s an awesome teacher. Both Johnny and David love working with him.
-Cheryl

I will definitely reach out in the future, spread the word and send people your way. I absolutely love the reading clinic you have going on! The environment has just been so so empowering. I am so happy that my kids have seen a totally different type of school atmosphere! Who knows maybe one day I will see if I can teach with you guys!
-Carla (now homeschooling her kids with the Barton)

Tate seems to be doing very well under Ben's tutelage. He has been getting glowing reports from his teacher - something that I didn't expect to happen so quickly! He also seems much more confident and hasn't been dreading school this year. We are very grateful to you both!

All the best, Juliana

Lyla loves Misty and has asked for math with Misty as she’s seeing that the Barton sessions are already making a difference at school. So glad we found you guys!
-Sam

“John completed level 1 today and has already started level 2! He's doing very well!” :)
That’s fantastic! Thanks so much Maria T!
(You’re obviously doing a great job motivating and encouraging him because he doesn’t complain AT ALL when we tell him he must cut short his play date at the school or his video games at home to do tutoring! Trust me when I say, this is a big deal!!)
-Charmaine

Hi Monica,
Thank you so much - we are so proud of him!
And also, of course, we are so grateful to you for your years of help and support. You have truly made a world of difference to Xavier, not only in terms of his reading and writing, but in terms of his self-confidence as a learner.
Very best wishes!
Thank you!!
JE

Hello Monica

Thank you so much Maria. We can not thank you enough. I feel compelled to write this, as our experience has been such a positive one. You have been wonderful, an absolute joy to work with. Gabriel has been very fortunate to have had you for his tutor. This program has been a game changer for him, one hundred percent. His reading and writing have improved to a point that frankly seems miraculous to us. He just got his report and got an 83% in academic English! He’s reading high level, complex books with ease and comprehending them!
Thanks Monica for the Reading Clinic and providing this much needed service. I remember when we first found out Gabriel was dyslexic in grade 2 we were really scared at what that meant for Gabriel and how it would affect his future. We worried that having dyslexia might slow him down and that he may never be able reach his full potential. We now know that’s not the case. Now, there’s nothing he can’t do. He can do anything he sets his mind to do just like everyone else.
It’s been a pleasure ️

PS. Monica, you may not have seen the last of us yet…does your offer still stand? We have encouraged Gabriel and he is considering taking you up on your offer of becoming a tutor for the Reading Clinic. If so would you mind please sending him/me any information you have about the position.
Thanks again and have a wonderful weekend!
Cheers, Yvonne
Gabe is the second student to complete Level 10!!!

Stella is reading at the top of the Grade 3 level! She currently gets withdrawal support, but they are going to mover her back into her regular class! I totally appreciate all the work you (Maria T) do with her – it’s working!
Jana – an update….

Hi Monica,
Just wanted to share that thanks to Maria’s patience and dedication and the extra support Stella is receiving at school, Stella is now reading above her grade level!!
Wanted to give a shout out to express our gratitude for an amazing program and for an awesome tutor!!

Thanks Monica!
We really love Maria T. She’s been the perfect fit for Colton and the sessions have really helped him with his spelling :)
Hope you’re well.
Lauren

Thank you so much, Monica, for all of the terrific work you've done with him over these years. He's a totally different kid from when he started with you in Jan 2019!
Very best,
Jeri
