Hiring Baxton Harper Accounting was one of the biggest mistakes I've made in business. I brought them on in October 2023 for a simple project—just a second opinion and minor amendments to work that had already been done by another accountant. They estimated it would take 4-6 weeks. Eight months later, the project was finally cut off by me, and only after constant follow-ups on my part did we get as far as we did.

For the first four months, nothing happened despite numerous promises. Every time I reached out, they'd do something for a day or offer excuses, and then I'd hear nothing until I followed up again. If I hadn’t continuously pushed, I doubt anything would have been done. This lack of communication and delays ended up costing me over $5,000 in CRA penalties.

On top of that, when I decided not to have them do my 2023 taxes due to their terrible service, they blamed me for delays, saying that my withholding my 2023 tax information was the reason the project took so long and could not be finished. Absolutely not true. And to top it off, they sent me an invoice in March 2024 that I never received, they subsequently didn't even follow up on, and then blamed me for not paying it and that caused the delays! I paid every invoice I received, but in my panic to complete this project I somehow ended up paying one invoice twice. Now, they refuse to reimburse me for this $680 overpayment, claiming a $600 "discount" they gave me earlier for as a consolation for the 'communication issues' they were experiencing somehow evens things out. That is outright theft and shows their lack of integrity.

The worst part? After all this, there was zero ownership or accountability for the stress, delays, or financial hit I took. I’ve spent too much time going back and forth with one of their Directors, Lee, who offered nothing but excuses, inaccurate facts, and deflections. There is way more to this story then I can type. I have been associated with Baxton Harper for several years. Initially, my affiliation was with Forward Professional, but I was transitioned to Baxton Harper without any explanation. My primary contact was Krista, who initially appeared promising and made several commitments. However, she subsequently became unresponsive. When attempting to reach the company, the primary contact functions as a gatekeeper to the accountants, and direct communication with an accountant is only possible through persistent requests or under circumstances involving the CRA.

The positive review claiming Krista's excellence may be questionable, potentially written by her or a company representative in an effort to restore her reputation. We hired them to do our year end taxes, they took 4 months, charged us for little tasks they completed, incorrectly I might add, then we found out they hadn't even started on our taxes when we received a notice from the government. This company couldn’t be run any worse. I run a simple agency and hired them to file my corporate return, HST and personal taxes. Their rates of $1800+ $300 for personal tax are so high… especially given the lack of any real advice for a startup, numerous filing mistakes that I caught. When I asked to meet with the accountant who did my taxes I gave them a month to schedule the appointment. After 2/3 follow ups I had to set up the meeting myself and met with an accountant who didn’t even work on my file and had no clue who I was or what I was asking for. I simply wanted to review the work being done and align it with our bookkeeper. If you’re looking for support and guidance on filing things correctly as a new business you won’t get it here. In fact, you’ll need to hire somebody who can catch all these mistakes and call them out and even then they won’t really address them or explain anything in any detail or how they compiled their filing. This company is the type of company where 5-10 years later you get audited by CRA and you end up with a surprise bill of tens of thousands or more because things were improperly filed. There is hardly ever a response from their admin person either when asked for simple tasks to be done like scheduling things or something simple like a document lookup. If you think you’re paying a premium for good service or advice, you’re wasting your money and time. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THESE BOZOS. More...

This company is a joke. Here are some (by far not all) of the issues I experienced with this company:
1. You do not directly communicate with an accountant. You are connected with a representative whose sole job is to forward emails. On average, one round takes one week, and if you want to clarify something or have a follow-up, one more week.
2. I had a super-simple case: no employees, no income, just a loss claim. It took 2.5 months and over 30 emails. After 2.5 months, I ended up talking with an accountant, who was also 20 minutes late for the meeting.
3. They use some software internally that sends you emails all the time, but they do not tell you about it. After I tried to act on those emails and asked the contact person some clarifying questions, I was told to ignore them. Why did I receive them in the first place?
4. They worked really hard to keep the service fee "variable, depending on the case..." I had to craft an amendment to the service agreement to capture the price for their service.
5. The information in the documents they want me to sign is sometimes incorrect, such as misspelled names and wrong dates.

Even if the tax filing result is perfect (🤞), I have zero trust in this company, not to say how huge of a time sink and a source of frustration it is. More...
