Phil Doherty Photographer (Bold Terrier Ltd)

What makes a good photographer? An eye for composition, an understanding of light and the ability to build a rapport with clients and the subject of the photo. I take images that are full of personality, whether they are posed or candid. I use my skills across portraiture, wedding/event and commercial photography and I've worked for multinational organisations, individual clients and SMEs. What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?

Generally, I would say an understanding of light and how it affects a scene or subject. Composition is also important as is having the confidence to 'break those design rules'. When photographing people it's knowing how to relax them and then pose them so that the results are flattering.

What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?

These would include: What is the purpose of the photoshoot? What are they expecting in terms of deliverables? Style and aesthetic (can they share examples of work they like or describe the mood / style they desire). Deadlines, terms and conditions, including usage rights and cancellations/rescheduling. Depending on the actual commission there will be many more questions so that I can gather all relevant information to ensure that the client is incredibly happy with the final images.

What do you love most about your job?

If I had to pinpoint what I love most, it would be the ability to freeze moments in time and tell stories through my lens. Photography allows me to capture the beauty, emotions, and unique essence of a fleeting moment, turning it into a lasting memory. There's a magical power in a photograph's ability to evoke emotions, trigger memories, and transport people to a specific moment in time. That connection between the viewer and the image is what fuels my passion for photography and makes every click of the shutter a meaningful experience

What inspired you to start your own business?

For over 15 years I was in the video industry directing and producing content for businesses. That was my focus and photography was just a hobby. But I had alway regretted not pursuing it as a career (it was my first passion, going back to when I was about 11 years old). A turning point came a few years ago when I began receiving photography opportunities through my connections in the video industry. It was at that moment I decided to transition into professional photography, and since then, I haven't looked back.

Why should our clients choose you?

It's incredibly fulfilling to document life's special occasions, create visual narratives, and bring out the best in people and scenes. Every project is a new and exciting challenge, and the creative process of framing, composing, and capturing an image that resonates is immensely rewarding. Obviously, it would all fall flat if you, the client, didn't like the results so exceeding your expectations is my priority.
