‘21 Certificate of Excellence

Cracked Light Photography offers a range of photographic services and products from family portraits, including maternity and newborn (bump to baby), through professional headshots, to commercial product promotion and advertising images. Most packages include a number of full resolution, post-processed images, usually between 5 and 10, or the option for a colour or monchrome print. Prior to engagement, I prefer to have a face to face consultation with new clients to answer any queries that they may have, and to get a full understanding and appreciation of the client's expectations of the images to be provided. There is no charge for consultations (providing I don't have to travel too far), and they are commitment free. Sessions can be arranged at my home studio just outside Newtownards, or at the client's premises. Once shortlisted, client images are made available to view in a private gallery accessed via my website www.crackedlight.com. Once a client has created a profile, they can identify the images that they like, and add notes should they want anything specific applied to the image during post processing. Depending on the agreement, images can be provided on a CD, or be made available for download. Smaller versions of images can be provided for social media etc. at no additional cost. Payment may be made by cheque, cash or Paypal.

What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?

"You cannot successfully photograph that which you do not understand." I am not sure who originally said it, but it is quite true. Understanding your subject is essential for a great photograph. With sport it enables the photographer to anticipate the action and be ready, for a great portrait it enables the sitter's personality to shine through in the final image. What makes the sitter laugh, become thoughtful, or get a glint in their eye. For newborn babies it is understanding when they will be most compliant to allow you to pose them. For all images understanding light is essential, in fact it is where the name "Cracked Light" originates - by "cracking" the secret of good lighting I aim to create great images.

What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?

The first question, if not obvious from the enquiry, is why the person wants the images. What is their purpose? This has a few implications from generating ideas on how the images might look, where they should be taken, to copyright release.
The next question is budget. I will always try to find a way to deliver what the customer needs against whatever budget they may be working to.
I then ask more specific questions in relation to the subject matter and images themselves: how many images do you need, background requirements, angles, use of props, etc.
This is quickly followed by timeframe - when does the client want the images taken, and when do they need the images to be ready for use.
For example, for bump to baby the due date is important in scheduling the shoots. The "bump" session needs to be 2 to 4 weeks prior to the due date, and the newborn session up to 14 days after.
All of the questions above help generate an accurate price.
Once I have a feel for the type and style of images required, I like to have just a general chat and get to know a little about the client. Regardless of what the images are of I try to add a little of the client's personality to them so that they feel a connection with the process and the end result.

What do you love most about your job?

I love the reactions of clients when they first see their images, especially newborn pictures.
I love being creative.
I love that every session is different (even with repeat clients).
I love working with images, drawing out the best in each one.
I love the sound of a shutter.
I love the thought that each image is a frozen moment in time, a memory captured.

What inspired you to start your own business?

My first passion was art (it still is), but when my daughter was born I thought that photography would be quicker - it isn't, but it didn't matter, I was hooked. When my daughter was just a few weeks old we booked a session with a photographer and were really disappointed with the results. I completed a course at the South Eastern regional College, practiced (a lot) and slowly built up my equipment so that I could offer a better service than I had experienced before. I am still only part time (it is hard to give up the security of a full time job when you have a family and a mortgage) but I love the challenges working for yourself brings. Maybe one day I will take the plunge and take my photography full time, but for now I am happy to generate enough income to cover costs and to give people images that make them happy.

Why should our clients choose you?

First of all, I care. I care that my client is truly happy with the product and service that I provide. I am my own worst critic, and constantly strive for perfection.
I am patient, which is really really handy when working with infants and children.
I am creative, I put a lot of thought into the photgraphy session so that at the end my client doesn't feel like they have visited a photo booth in a shopping centre.
As I am part time, and just starting out, building my portfolio, my prices are very reasonable, but that is no reflection on the quality of my work. I aim to give professional results and guarantee my work. If my clients are not fully satisfied with the images produced they do not have to purchase any, and will not owe me anything for the actual session itself.
