I understand that to make that first call or email for counselling can be extremely difficult, the fact you’re here means you’ve taken the first step towards making positive changes in your life. Are you stuck, feeling lost or alone, afraid or upset? I aim to help you to make sense of your fears, worries and anxieties. Many people find it easier to talk to someone who they see as being separate to their life rather than friends or family.
Susan
Christine, I have found your help quite amazing, I wished I had met you years ago. I was very nervous at the first meeting but within 10 minutes I felt completely at ease. I’m working on the new strategies you recommended and it’s so good to feel positive again. I’m looking forward to our follow up session in two weeks time!

Hello and welcome. My name is Dougie Robertson MBACP (Accred) Counsellor with 13yrs experience in private practice and 5yrs within the NHS. Whether you're hoping to understand and move beyond traumatic experiences originating in your past, or to realise long-awaited changes in your personal or professional relationships in the present, I'm here to help. My counselling approach will support you in a kindly and non-judgemental way that perhaps friends just aren't able to.
Laurence
'Through the five years of my therapy with Dougie, he guided me to see things with a different perspective, challenged old ways of thinking I had become accustomed to. Throughout these sessions, no matter how hard they were, I always left feeling positive, with hope, that life is actually ok and I do not have to be held back by my past. He guided me to find my own answers and find the right tools to deal with challenges I encountered in life. I guess a good way of looking at it would be to imagine my mind was like a really messy house and he helped me to tidy it up and put the mess into cupboards.
I had a mindset of wanting to get fixed before my therapy, with Dougie's guidance I realised there was nothing to fix and I'm great just the way I am'

Karen helped me through the most difficult time of my life. Between a nervous breakdown and then shortly after losing a loved one I'd developed a panic disorder so severe I was having multiple debilitating panic attacks a day (something that before this I believed was a myth made up by people unable to cope with reality - boy was I wrong).
Through Karen's incredible insight, experience and empathy she helped me rebuild, understand and accept myself like never before. She equipped me with the tools and knowledge to identify within myself those triggers and thoughts that got me to that point, helping me to protect myself from ever feeling that way again.
Karen saved my life.
Karen, you can publish that with my name if you want - I stand by every word.
Love and light x

My private work involves providing talking therapy for a range of difficulties people may experience in their lives. These may include depression, anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, bereavement, obsessive-compulsive disorders, personality disorders and interpersonal or unresolved childhood issues. One of the advantages in seeing a private therapist is that there is more flexibility as there are no set session limits that are often imposed within NHS/public services.

*I offer a 20min FREE consultation* In fact I insist on it as I believe it is important that myself and my clients are well attuned. My approach to coaching is based on my psycho-therapeutic training and my spiritual path, as well as employing a holistic method so that each client’s session is tailored for appropriately. My experience working with vulnerable people suffering from complex needs and homelessness has allowed me insight into the real issues faced every day by those less privileged in society. I have mentored people to help them move beyond past traumas and addictions to realise their true potential and engage effectively with society. More tangibly, I have worked with moving homeless clients into their own homes and coaching them to help sustain their tenancies. Having inspired those in society who have felt very disillusioned and hopeless, I believe that I am able to cater my skills to anyone feeling stuck and trapped, who needs guidance towards fulfilling their potential. My studies have been quite an eclectic mix, as I studied History before completing a Masters in Philosophy and going on to train as a psychotherapist, but over the years, studying in these various disciplines has provided me with acute analytical skills. This is important as I believe that untangling the inner mess within our psyche is fundamental to start achieving goals. Therefore, I always spend each session, in particular the initial sessions, by analysing what is underneath each choice, decision and goal before presenting it back to you, for you to see the possible underlying issues. I am always very keen to engage in discussion regarding wider topics of concern, such as why am I here and what is the meaning of my life. These existential questions are important topics of discussion, particularly in our modern world, in order for us to grasp who we are and where we fit in the world. Therefore, if you’re feeling empty, unsure and stuck, I can help to discuss what it is that may be causing those feelings and what the possibilities are going forward. Jung referred to people in his position as 'wounded healers'. It is unsurprising that many in this profession have suffered similar issues to what their clients face and I am no different. I have had my fair share of issues in the past and that experience has become a real impetus to help others because there is no better satisfaction in helping people than the one that you understand so intrinsically yourself.
My experience working for charities and within the NHS has shown me the limitations of the approaches employed across the country. There is focus on a short-term, symptom relieving therapies which do not help people in the long run and I am keen to break free of that and help individuals in the way they need.
Clients should choose me if they feel their values are aligned with mine, not otherwise. I have a background working with the very vulnerable in society and have plenty of theoretical study to understand the wider issues individuals face, so as long as someone is open and willing to be vulnerable with me, I believe through a relational approach, I can help guide them to the path they need.
I can provide services both online and face to face. I have a private place which I can work from and if the weather is good, I am very keen to meet outdoors in a quiet and relaxing environment. For those further out or more comfortable talking online, I have completed a very specific training with the BACP about the benefits and drawbacks of coaching online, so I would be able to provide a service, just as effective, over Zoom.
