Dee Rooney Powell Bereavement Counsellor

I am a specialist grief and loss counsellor. I also work to support clients feeling overwhelmed, anxious or depressed due to loss and situations they are finding difficult to live with. I work with clients who have lost someone and are now struggling with the many things that we find happening to us after a significant loss. For example, you may be struggling with many difficult feelings such as extreme grief and sadness, anxiety, depression, exhaustion, guilt, remorse, sometimes even relief which then triggers other feelings. You may be worried about practical things in life you can't do or concerned about finances which is leaving you anxious, unable to sleep or eat properly. You may be feeling hopeless and despair and worrying about your own wellbeing and health. Perhaps you've realised 'keeping busy' or 'putting a brave face on for others' are both themselves leaving you more exhausted and now is the time to seek someone independent and specially trained to help you get through this very difficult period you are experiencing. Please know you are not alone. I am here to offer my support to you, either in person or over the phone or online, remotely. We can work together to allow you to tell the story of your loved one, of how the loss is impacting you now and our sessions can then support you to work through your grief. Perhaps you are further on in time in your grief journey and want to talk about the issues around trying to rebuild your life, the different life, now things are so different. I am there all through the pain, the sadness and the healing. I am able to offer my non-judgemental attention to you so you can be yourself and process the situation you have found yourself in, whatever that looks like now or how long ago your loss was. I've even worked with clients who want to process a parental loss or loss of child from over 50 years ago. There is no situation or loss that is not valid to seek support for. I have special training as a bereavement specialist and I also volunteer for a bereavement and loss charity. I am also qualified to work with young people (usually over 8 years of age) who have experienced a loss but prefer to do this in person locally only, with their responsible adult present, although we do work in a separate room, for confidentiality. I am trained to work with clients who are neurodiverse and am fully inclusive so whatever your background or religious views, I am trained and sensitive in the issues surrounding bereavement for different groups of people and those from the main faiths (or none) prevalent in Britain including Christian, Muslim, Buddhist and Hindu. Mindfulness/anxiety I am also a qualified mindfulness practitioner/therapeutic mindfulness teacher which helps me to teach you how to regulate some of the overwhelming sadness and grief. Therapeutic retreats I lead therapeutic 1:1 bereavement retreats where clients can stay in a safe and homely environment, in their own annex, and have daily therapeutic sessions. These usually last for 5 nights and clients continue therapy on their return home, online. Please get in touch with me if you are feeling overwhelmed and want to have someone to support you through your grief, to be able to have a space to feel heard and not judged or want to just know that you are not the only person to have felt this way, post loss. I tend to work weekly for the first month and then we can move to fortnightly if this feels right for you. Usually clients need between 8 - 12 sessions unless there are compounded factors with the grief. I work in Malvern, Worcestershire on the mainline train line from Birmingham, Hereford and London, or remotely. Some clients have requested phone therapy and I am happy to work in this way too, if that feels more comfortable to you.

What do you love most about your job?

I love helping people to get to be the person they want to be, feel how they want to feel and live how they want to live. It's a big statement, but it's possible and I love meeting people seeing them make the changes they hope for.

What inspired you to start your own business?

My own struggles to find appropriate support when I had challenges in my own life. I realised that all the things I learned would have been so helpful to have had access to. I wanted to reduce suffering in others and provide a service to help them through their challenges that was accessible and helpful.

Why should our clients choose you?

If you have overwhelming feelings I can help you manage those to be able to get the most out of counselling and talking therapy. I work on the presumption that the body and mind are linked so healing and therapy should work with calming the body as well as talking through mental pain. I specialise in working with grief, anxiety and trauma resulting from loss and mostly relationship issues, either in the present or past.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

Yes I work remotely and in person. Clients can select their own preferred ways to work.

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

I work online and in person ensuring spaces are clean and airy.
