How can someone tell if their Garage is suitable for conversion?
If you have a brick or block garage attached to your house it is probably suitable for converting. When you are thinking about whether your garage is suitable for conversion you might like to consider:
Whether there are any known problems with your garage, are there any cracks in it? Is it damp? Does the roof leak? Has the floor been contaminated with fuel or oil?
How will you get into the new room? Have you got or can you put a doorway through to the garage from the house?
Will you have enough parking and storage area if you convert your garage?
Is there enough room in your garage to provide the accommodation that you require or would you be better extending the property?
Is your existing garage built from an unusual construction? For example, prefabricated panels, concrete frame etc.
If you can resolve all of these issues then your garage may well be suitable for conversion.
Run us through the different stages of the Garage conversion process - what's involved?
Making sure the walls and roof are sound.
Floor slab – the existing floor may need to be levelled, damp-proofed and insulated.
Infilling the door – Most garage conversions simply brick up the garage door.
Wall insulation.
Roof insulation.
Windows & doors.
How can someone tell if their loft is suitable for conversion?
It depends of the type of loft and total cubic meterage. It must measure 2.2 metres from the floor to the highest point.
Run us through the different stages in the loft conversion process - what’s involved?
Scaffolding is erected and an opening is formed to allow materials to be taken into the loft space. Materials arrive on site. Then are lifted on the landing platform. Steels are carefully positioned in the loft area to enable the installation of the floor joists and the removal of the cross members. After the steels are in position timbers are then adapted and added to form the general loft space. Internal timber partitions are then built which form the separate rooms. Electrical and plumbing installation can then take place. Openings are made ready to accept the roof lights. Roof lights are installed. Generally any window configuration can be achieved. Final touches are then applied, including floors and decoration.
How long have you been in business?
I have been in building industry for over 30 years working for my family's building company. I took over Surrey Hills as Managing director and shareholder with my cousin Luke in September 2024. The company has a great track record and an amazing reputation that i look forward to growing to new heights.
What guarantee does your work come with?
16. Guarantees: All customers will benefit from a full guarantee on our workmanship for a period of 12 months. Guarantees on materials run in accordance with manufacturer’s warranty periods where applicable. Our guarantee covers all new work and new materials used in construction or repairs but does not guarantee the integrity of any existing structures, materials or decorations. In the event of a failure beyond the guarantee period we will be happy to investigate the cause and negotiate a solution to the problem without delay and carry out any agreed repairs as soon as possible. Charges may apply for remedial work carried out beyond guaranteed dates or to items not covered by our guarantee. Please note: Decorations are signed off on completion and not covered by guarantee. Plastering work is covered by a 6-month guarantee. Please note we provide a 6-month guarantee for plastering work to allow for settling in time. We therefore strongly recommend delaying any decorating for this period. Further warranties insurance backed are offered by various providers. Please ask for more details.

Extensions
An extension is an excellent way to add space and value to your home. It provides the opportunity to not only expand outward, but also open up internal spaces for reconfiguration. For example, you can combine a kitchen and dining area within the extension, creating a sense flow between these two areas.
It can also be used to separate out different parts of a house or provide extra storage in various rooms. With this type of extension, you will benefit from its size increase whilst ensuring it looks like a natural part of your home that seamlessly blends in with existing architecture.
Loft Conversions
A loft conversion or an attic conversion is the process of transforming an empty attic space or loft into a functional room, typically used as a bedroom, office space, or storage space. Loft conversions are one of the most popular forms of home improvement in the United Kingdom as a result of their numerous perceived benefits.
Conservatorys
To understand what counts as a conservatory, let’s look at the regulations that make conservatories permitted developments and excepts them from planning permission and building regulations.
The UK government previously defined a conservatory as having at least 50% of its external wall and 75% of its roof area manufactured of translucent material. However, this definition has evolved as conservatory designs have become more diverse and flexible structures than the plant-growing glasshouses they once were.
To legally count as a conservatory, the build must:
Be built at ground level.
Be less than 30 square metres in size.
Be separated from the house by external walls, windows or doors.
Have its own independent heating system.
Have glazing and fixed electrical installations which comply with the relevant building regulations.
Windows and Doors
We supply and fit UPVC and Aluminium windows and doors as well as offering a sealed unit repair service.
Garage Conversion
Carrying out a garage conversion is the perfect way to add extra space to your home without extending — plus, in many cases, it won't require planning permission.
While trading in your garage for living space means forgoing a covered parking space, where extra rooms are needed this sacrifice is, more often than not, completely worthwhile.
Garage conversions have other benefits when compared to extensions too. They are usually cheaper, quicker and easier to carry out so that, while they are not always necessarily a cheap project, they are most certainly one of the most cost-effective ways to add some square meterage to your home.
Garden Room
By definition, a garden room is a stand-alone building separate from the home, but we think it’s much more than this.
It’s an office, a gym, a games room and more! Plus, with sizes available in measurements from 4m² to 30m², the possibilities are truly endless.
Garden rooms are a cost-effective, flexible outdoor building solution that offers much more versatility than conservatories or summerhouses.
Benefits of a garden room over other home extension options:
Planning permission rarely required
Building control sign off not required
Installed a lot faster than general new build projects
No hidden costs with all of the ‘essentials’ included in the price
Minimal disruption to your home life
Foundations/base installation and levelling included in the price
Fully installed by Surrey Hills Extend and Renovate with no subcontractors
A unique and modern building solution
