I have just completed a complex hardscape structure with Grau Building. This included decking, electrical, hardscape, multiple subs, engineering retaining walls, etc. From the outset, Grau was organized, punctual, stuck to estimates, explained any variances (which were modest), and kept the project going to completion. He was particularly helpful with managing a number of code issues that came up late in the project.

We selected Jeff Grau to build a new bathroom and office space within an exiting unfinished attic area. The results are wonderful and the process was smooth. At first, the primary reason we selected Jeff was his transparency with respect to cost, pricing, and his fixed margin. As the project continued we could easily see each sub-contractor invoice and understand the drivers of the total cost. Even in the estimate phase he included his subcontractors in the conversation so we could make the most educated decisions and trade offs.

As for the construction process itself, we were pleasantly surprised at his team's attention to detail and focus on delivering excellent results, but being mindful that this project was occurring in an occupied home. He went as far as erecting external scaffolding so the work could progress with limited disruption and no damage to existing parts of the house.

Finally, the direct interaction with Jeff and his team on an almost daily basis solidified the relationship. If we had a question or concern it was handled efficiently and effectively. I always knew I could reach Jeff and his team.

Words can't adequately capture the superb quality of our finished home nor the exceptional experience of working with Jeff Grau. From the very first encounter, Jeff listened, REALLY listened to us. His "partnership pricing" approach (see his website for description) not only made eminent sense but allowed us flexibility in choosing all the elements of our project and allowed us (because we wanted to) participate in shopping for the best value in construction elements such as appliances, kitchen cabinets, countertops, etc., guided by his leads on quality vendors. His attention to detail was evident from the beginning: in the unbelievable level of detail seen in our initial estimate, in his consistently keeping us updated on costs, and in his (and his amazing Project Manager's) constant visits to our building site. Jeff takes the time to get the foundation right, based on the unique character of the lot, and assures that the finished structure will not have water seepage or drainage issues. He uses subcontractors of proven high quality and professionalism. It's hard to imagine a builder more committed to customer satisfaction, integrity and honesty. We cannot begin to say enough great things about our experience with Jeff Grau and Grau Building Company. Having heavily renovated three homes and built another from the ground up, we consider ourselves relatively sophisticated consumers when it comes to home construction. We are pleased to share that Jeff exceeded our expectations at every turn.

Our most-recent project was an extensive renovation to the first floor of an older home (reduced to exterior walls and interior studs), coupled with the addition of a large second story. The home was transformed from a 3 BR, 2.5 bath 1960s ranch into a 5 BR, 5.5 bath "Hamptons" style home with a transitional floor plan, vaulted ceilings and intricate finish work. The project involved replacing most of the plumbing and electrical infrastructure, and all of the windows, doors, HVAC equipment and kitchen appliances. We moved/replaced one fireplace, added another and required quite a bit of hardwood, interior trim and brick/stone/general masonry work to tie together old and new. Along the way, Jeff and team took great care to protect the elements we were saving from the original home, and despite wind, rain and spending much of the summer without a roof, he succeeded in protecting everything we’d hoped to keep.

From Day 1, the inherent complexities of this transformation required a certain degree of "on the fly" flexibility from homeowner and general contractor alike. Jeff was unmatched in working through each and every nuance. Our decisions to make changes - from small things like the direction of door swings to major things like eliminating a breakfast room in favor of a large screened porch with new fireplace (which we decided well-after the midway point in the project) were met with enthusiasm and a "can do" spirit. Jeff took the time to understand our goals, preferences and intended uses of each room, and he reflected all of those elements in the finished product. He worked tirelessly on our behalf and - as he said he would - seemed to treat our investments as if they were his own.

Jeff is methodical, precise and has extremely high standards for his subs and employees alike. His attention to detail is excellent, and his online project management system provided invaluable transparency into each phase of our project. We were able to track progress - both operationally and fiscally - literally by the day. He was omni-present on the job site, and an exceptional communicator who’s quick to respond to emails, texts and phone call alike. Jeff was always willing to go the extra mile to ensure our experience was positive, and the end result is a true testament to the pride he takes in a job exceedingly well done.

I have had the pleasure of working with Jeff Grau and Grau Building Company on numerous projects, where I was the residential designer and he was the general contractor.
