While I'm proud of all my work, I'm particularly fond of the humanitarian work I provide for NGOs worldwide. A recent trip to Africa allowed me to work with Chance for Change in Malawi, to document their work to inform and educate school girls at risk of sexual abuse, exploitation, trafficking and slavery in Lilongwe.
Meaningful work, with immediate and lasting benefits for the communities they work for and in, reminds me just how important it is to provide compelling images for every organization to tell the story of the work they do.
There's no fixed start date, no first day on the job. But there was an 'ah hah' moment when I started Handheld Stories to provide communities confronting critical social issues the ability to tell their own stories, and the subsequent NGOs I partnered with to provide them with the captivating images that tell the stories of the work they do.
It is this same ethos - that the work we all do is worthy of compelling narrative imagery - that extends to your professional portrait, the performance of a famous (or not) jazz musician, as well as the brands that have trusted me with their work for years.
With more than 3 decades of media production experience, I've been lucky enough to have worked with some amazing talent on both sides of the lens. A profound shift in the focus of my work began several decades while volunteering at the Namgyal Monastery in Dharamsala, India, teaching the monks there to shoot, edit, and preserve the teachings of the Dalai Lama of Tibet.
Through this experience, I discovered the power of video advocacy, which led me to form the non-profit Handheld Stories, providing communities facing critical social situations the tools to tell their own stories.
In 2012 I received the Nikai Award for Excellence and Innovation in Education in 2012 for my work teaching at Dubai Men’s college from 2007-2013. Many of my former students now form the backbone of the country’s media and film production industries and have won numerous national and international awards.
I was recently honored as the recipient of the 2018 U.S. Artist Grant and frequently provide talks and seminars on video advocacy and photography.
