Great Barrington

One of those perfect places that fills a niche--upscale but worth it for special food. I've been for lunch and wine, cheese/charcuterie, and to buy olive oil for home-made pizza dough. Wine by the glass was pricey, and it might be nice to have a house red and white for lazier, two-glass afternoon meals!

I'll admit it: I don't "get" bagels. I'm a Westerner by way of the Deep South. Bagels are not in my heart and soul the way things like, say, grits, collards, and, uh, organic agave-sweetened smoothies are. But I can recognize quality in a bagel joint from afar, and Great Barrington Bagels seems to deliver the goods. It's a casual place, though there's room to sit down on the plastic booths. The breakfast business seems to be booming, with all matter of locals filtering through to grab their coffee and bagel and have a chat with whoever filters through. The store offers a bewildering variety of bagels and an equally bewildering variety of spreads and toppings, ranging from chopped liver to lox to hummus. I ordered a cup of their delicious and interesting fruit salad, which featured just about every in-season fruit I could think of mixed together - yummy. My dad ordered a bagel sandwich with egg and ham ($2.85) Â and also two bagel sandwiches with lox. I tried the lox, which was delicious - it had a fresh and not too mind-blowingly fishy taste that was just right for the morning. Great Barrington Bagels also provides a wide variety of bagel sandwiches, salads and just plain sandwiches (including a great looking reuben) if you find yourself nearby around lunch-time. It's a nice choice if you want a quick n' easy breakfast in Great Barrington.
