Anne Millar Vocal Excellence

Everyone has a voice and Anne Millar found hers in singing. She has spent her life sharing that voice with audiences and using it to teach those who want to find their unique way to connect with the world. Based in Perth, Western Australia, Anne has recently retired as a senior member of the WA Opera Chorus and taught voice at Penrhos College for 11 years, as well as at her successful home studio. She was vocal coach for the University of WA Choral Society and where she also delivered vocal workshops at their retreats. Born in northern Queensland, Anne studied singing at the NSW Conservatorium of Music, where she obtained the D.S.C.M. in Teaching and Performing. After also completing the Diploma of Operatic Art and Music Theatre, she was contracted to the West Australian Opera as Resident Mezzo-Soprano. She performed principal roles with the company and toured throughout Western Australia in the WA Opera’s community and touring program. As a soloist she has performed with the Perth Oratorio Choir and UWA Choral Society including works such as Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s Nelson Mass and Harmony Mass, Beethoven’s Mass in C, Magnificat by Bach, Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Mahler’s 2nd Symphony and Verdi’s Requiem. With the acclaimed Nova Ensemble, Anne has performed Ravel’s Chansons Madecasses and the great Mahler song cycles Song of a Wayfarer and Songs of the Earth, both transcribed for chamber orchestra and she has given a live ABC broadcast of Aria, a world premier by renowned contemporary composer Carl Vine. A passion of Anne’s is singing French and German Cabaret pieces of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As a result, she devised the cabaret Voyages a Paris – from Poulenc to Piaf, performing it throughout Perth and regional centres. Another foray into cabaret was Femmes Fatales – a History which she wrote and performed with an Opera colleague, and debuted at the Fringe World Festival. Now just recently, Anne presented her self-written work, one-woman show, "ILLUSIONS - a French Cabaret" to great acclaim, winning an award and Encore Season at Fringe World ‘22. What do you love most about your job?

Its the connection and trust I experience with my students. I'm there 100% for each of them and as a result my student feels encouraged and safe enough to allow me to find the source of any physical or emotional restriction blocking any free pathway of the voice. I love the breakthroughs and realisations that come in the process of the lessons. It brings me joy and elevates me. Its like magic and then I know my student and I are on the right path.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I've been teaching singing for 40 years. However, I specifically resigned from the WA Opera company so as to concentrate more on my own personal and professional projects. Now that my one-woman show, Illusions-a French Cabaret has been performed and up and running, I'm turning my energies to taking my singing studio, Anne Millar Vocal Excellence, to a higher level, where I can reach more people and show that there is a unique method of singing that can help anyone reach their vocal potential.

Why should our clients choose you?

My programme presents a system whereby my methods break down the act of singing and vocal technique into easy to understand and easy to reproduce concepts. Nothing left to chance or vagaries of interpretation. Clear and concise breathing methods and breath management, vocal placement, resonance and correct support.
Once mastered you will be in charge of the singing mechanisms, you will play with the air and tone and resonance like you're weaving magic.
Singing wasn't meant to be a hard or rigid process. Its an organic intensely individual personal journey. When working with the natural laws of physics within our body driven by your creative imagination, music is made.
And it's all you.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

Yes, I would require my student to connect to Zoom for Music Lessons. While I am new to this myself, I expect to be ready to assist you and we will have practice sessions together to sort out any issues before we begin the programme.

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

Due to the nature of singing lessons, wearing of a mask would greatly inhibit the process. My students are aware of this and come to their lessons fully in that understanding. Everything else that can be done, such as wiping surfaces clean, providing hand sanitiser, is carefully carried out.
