What kind of accounting services do you provide?
We provide accountancy, tax and business advisory services for individuals and businesses. Our clients range from individuals who file an income tax return once per year, to companies who have over 20 staff and require weekly accounts maintenance.
Why is it so important for businesses to hire a great accountant?
It is a good question actually. A good accountant will save you time and money by advising you of each and every tax and accounting aspect that applies to your individual scenario. We will keep you compliant with new tax legislation and rules which change at an alarming pace.

A good accountant will guide you through the sometimes perilous voyage of business and general tax life. It is what we do and it is what I have been doing for the best part of the last 25 years of my life. Actions speak louder than words. What do you love most about your job?
I know it is a cliché but I love pure numbers. Unfortunately in the accountancy profession the actual numbers are only a moderate portion of the whole service. A huge part of the accountancy and tax service is now highly compliance driven. For example, ten years ago a tax payer might get away with filing a return late because the person in Revenue hadn't yet got around to reviewing that file. Everything is now automated. Tax clearance status and RCT rates are decided by computer software. If a return is filed a minute late then the system automatically imposes interest and other penalties. This is why it is of the utmost importance to be organised and tax complaint. This is why it is a good idea to hire good accountants who will stand over their service.
What inspired you to start your own business?
It is something that I have always wanted. Nothing is easy in this life of ours and in my experience the most meaningful things in life are usually a struggle. Setting up a business is no different. I also feel that I am able to offer a unique experience for clients due to my experience in life and business to date.
Why should our clients choose you?
To be perfectly honest there is no reason why anyone 'should' choose us. There are many highly competent and excellent accountants out there - I personally know quite a few. If you are looking for a well rounded accountant and tax advisor then you cannot go wrong with Carand Accountants. I have been working in various accounting and tax roles since 1998. I have gone through the ups and downs and seen the way an accountancy practice should operate, and also how it should not. I only offer services that I can provide. If an individual or company requests a service that we do not provide, I will do my best to point that person in the right direction through my vast network of tax and accounting specialists.
Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.
Online or remotely is actually the way the profession is currently going. We use the latest cloud software to liaise with any client anywhere in the world. As a practice we usually recommend that clients get set up on Xero accountancy software. This allows us to offer training when required and also allows us real-time access to clients' books and records from anywhere that has an internet connection. Carand Accountants is a Xero Partner which allows us to get discounted prices on software.
What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?
This is not as applicable is it may have been several years back. As a practice we try to use online chat software such as Microsoft Teams as much as possible. I find that a ten minute chat can often save a hundred emails.

Financial Advisory
Sole trade or limited company?
This is a very common question I am asked. Both have pros and cons, and like most things, it depends on the particular circumstances. Please feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss further.
Group structures.
A group structure can be a very useful way to protect assets in a business. For example, a business may have premises that are owned by the company. If, for example, the business was sued or the trade declined, then creditors, including Revenue and financial institutions, would force the sale of the premises to meet the outstanding debt. But if the premises were held in a separate group company, then it would be protected from a forced sale. This is just one example of many.
Support with loan applications / financing.
Banks and credit institutions are increasingly seeking forecasting and projections when businesses are applying for credit. Through years of experience, we are experts at producing high quality forecasting and projections based on tangible information. Many agents will produce grossly overstated projected figures which usually fail to get past the first stage of the application process.
Cost versus benefit analysis.
This question is the core of pretty much all business decisions. If I spend this money now, can I expect to reap the rewards at a later date? Is it better to purchases a vehicle myself or purchase it through a business? If I purchase this new machine will it benefit the business, both economically and through increased efficiency?
