My wife and I had dinner there last night.Overall, the food was excellent and the service was great. Obviously they put a lot of heart into this place. I had the steak bavette which was done perfectly, and I loved the green squash gnocchi that accompanied the steak. Wonderful dish. My wife had the pork chop and loved it. We also split a heirloom tomato/ white peach salad with shaved toasted garlic. We thought the garlic overwhelmed the wonderfully ripe fruit.....maybe ask them to go easy on the toasted garlic.Didn't have dessert, but they looked great. The wines by the glass and bottle were reasonably priced and very well chosen with some unusual varietals that paired well with the cuisine. Why not 5 stars? We were initially seated at a table by the widow, and the noise level in the restaurant was deafening. It's a small place with a lot of hard surfaces. We asked to move to a different table away from the window, and were immediately accommodated. Much better away from the window! It would be great if they could do something about the reflective surfaces that amplify the noise level. More...

Really lovely food and wonderful wine list. The tempura mushrooms were delicate and savory. The salmon cooked perfectly, very moist. Thick flavorful pork chops too. Heirloom tomato and burrata was sweet and delish. Proprietors were delightful. Limited dessert menu with no chocolate option!... but very nice peachy crumble and breadpudding. Outdoor seating with heat lamps is nice too. Parking is tough as that neighborhood has other fun places including the indie cinema. Expensive but gives good value! More...

Gave this brunch spot a try before going to Outside Lands, and first things first, this place was super accommodating! I was about 20 minutes out and called the place to see how long the wait would be, and the gentleman on the phone offered to put my name down and was able to guarantee me a table by the time I got there. We ended up getting there a little later than expected, but we were still able to be seated almost immediately. The space is relatively small but makes for an intimate dining experience. The walls are vibrant with unique wall paper and painted floral designs; definitely enjoyed the look of this place! Service was also outstanding, staff was very attentive and food came out super quick. We ordered two of the braised pork rib hash bowls and a mimosa and sangria for drinks & couldn't be happier with our selection! Food was fantastic! Ribs were literally so tender they just fall off the bone. The potatoes, corn, and tomatoes were sautéed perfectly and were not too oily and mixed with the arugula, made the dish taste light and refreshing and not too heavy. And can't forget about the drinks; my sangria was bomb! Just the right amount of tart from the mixed in fruit and for only $8, they are served and filled to the brim of a large wine glass! Can't wait to give this place another try in the future! More...

Wow! Went here last night for the tasting menu dinner. Unbelievable! (And a great value!). The salmon dish was the best I've had in San Francisco. The warm bread and whipped butter with sea salt were delicious and the textures were perfect. The flank steak had the most interesting flavors in the accompanying quinoa (was it turmeric or curry?). So. Damn. Good. Our server was lovely, so down to earth and friendly. Wine bottles are half off on Wednesday's so we were lucky on that front (although the wines are well priced to begin with). I ordered the Japanese breakfast (with the natto) and my girlfriend got the continental -- both hit our respective cravings. I'd come again if it weren't for the distance all the time if I wanted to get my Japanese breakfast craving filled. Found this place on Yelp for a team event. Called in and was directed to who I think was the owner and we communicated via text to schedule our reservation. Yuka was super responsive and made the experience easy. Unfortunately, a few of our team members ended up dropping out last minute which reduced our head count, but the restaurant was super understanding and we still received excellent service. We ordered almost everything off the a la carte menu and it was all amazing. The burrata salad stood out as a winner and the honey butter was simple, but amazing. For the entree I got the steak and the restaurant was super understanding of allergies and made substitutions as needed. I loved the Japanese sweet potatoes that were in this dish. For dessert we ordered all 4 items and I loved the cheese plate (yes cheese can be a dessert) and the chocolate dish. Highly recommend both. Overall, had a great experience! A Monday night review is rare for me...but I had to do it!Why?  Because I'm giving you time to make it to Wine Wednesday, where all wine bottles are 50% off!  WHAT!OK, I really adored this spot.  It's cozy, friendly, and soooo neighborhood-y.Not to mention that dinner is absolutely farm-to-table amazing. The four-course tasting menu for $48 per person is what's up.  I will say that at first glance, it's not super vegetarian friendly.  But I was so pleasantly surprised that a few simple adjustments can be made. The baby kale salad and burrata dish are befitting for those of us with special needs.  And puhleeze SAVE ROOM FOR DESSERT.  The Lemon Posset is still calling my name.  And if you want to try something a little more homey, then go for the bread pudding (it will be extra, but just do it!). A few other special touches:1.  Cocktails are amazing alchemy.  I'm into those herbacious types.2.  Order a bottle sake with dinner, and do take their recommendations!   2.  And next...sit at the Chef's table if you can.  You can't see all of the action from there, but it's still a pretty sweet spot right next to the window that offers a little more privacy than the main dining area.  3.  And finally, I recommend a reservation if you can, because it's a cozy - and lovely - lil place.  We San Franciscans owe it to ourselves to get back to authentic neighborhood SF experiences! Ommmmnomnom Cassava is so unique and not overdone, not pretentious, and just overall delicious. It has delicate Japanese flair but isn't TOO light in flavor. They get it just right. The staff is great except the hostess who was very awkward and unhelpful but our server - great at explaining the menu and also he just had a very calming voice.Anyway, came here maybe around noon on a Sunday looking for a table for 3 and had to wait about 45 min so we went to walk by the lake nearby and look at toytles. *shrugs* it's kinda a tiny restaurant.Once we got in, we all got drinks -  me and kp got the celery + apple + carrot + etc juice and it was very refreshing. ag got the honey spiced latte which was actually so good - the flavors were subtle and almost reminded us of barley tea.I'm so annoying and indecisive and first wanted to get the Lamb salad and then about 5 min changed my order to the Pork Shoulder Open Sandwich and they were nice about it, haha. AND I'M SO GLAD I DIDGOD the open sandwich was beautiful and well-balanced and so flavorful. The egg on top was perfectly cooked and great for egg porn and the slabs of pork on top were VERY flavorful (might be a little too fatty for some people) and I just appreciate the thought that went into the spiced spread on the bread, the arugula, the type of bread that they used because it was a delight to eat and quite filling.kp got the Japanese Breakfast which also looked delicious and ag got the Slow Braised Pork Rib Hash which a lot of people also seemed to be getting. Cassava always bring their "A" game for interesting menu items in a cozy neighborhood location with friendly staff that have the right level of attentiveness. I went with two appetizers (Fried Smelt and Fried Chicken) for my entree. The fried smelt was tender and crunchy, just the right mix of texture. The gribiche (a tasty homemade tartar-like sauce) and an avocado puree were perfect accompaniments. The fried chicken is cooked first using sous-vide and so it's crazy tender. And the salting and crunchiness and the aioli are one of the best in San Francisco. I think this is around a 4.5/5 rounded up - one of my favorite places to grab brunch in SF!  I usually order whatever the hash bowl they have is - one time it was a sausage and the other time it was a bbq pork rib hash bowl.  Both were really good and delicious!  The meats are always cooked really well, with the ribs falling off the bone the time I ordered it.  The eggs are also spot on, with a running yolk as you cut through it.  The sides that the plates come with (ie. potatoes) are also seasoned well, tasty, and a good complement to the main stars of the plate. Food aside, the service here is also really great.  The servers are friendly, helpful, and attentive throughout your dining experience.  You'll have a choice to sit inside or outside (outside has heaters so you don't have to worry about getting cold), and street parking nearby is doable.  If you're looking for a new brunch place to try out over the weekend, I highly recommend making the journey out here to give Cassava a try!  I definitely like brunch here better than the other hyped/popular spots in the city. Alright. This was a Wednesday evening reservation (booked via Resy on their website) dinner.  We arrived at 6:40pm for a 7:00pm reservation and were promptly seated (three other tables were occupied in a 26 seater room - plus empty & chilly outside dining was available. )Right away I liked the place. The decor is confusing and there is no theme, but the chairs and tables scream "hipster" and "instagram me", which clearly enthused one neighboring patron to squeal "OMG THAT LOOKS SO GOOD I NEED A PICTURE" when an appetizer of fois gras was served.  Oh god, I hope no one lumps me in with these "millennials". What a disappointment.  But, yeah, I liked the almost-chaotic nature of the restaurant.Regardless, I was here 1) for my fiance's Birthday and 2) to experience a foodie's wet dream (since I usually order take-out or delivery, I wanted to try something new).  A $$$ in the outer Richmond, how quaint.Well - after carefully perusing their online December tasting menu and finding it had lamb (the fiance's favorite) I really talked up how "yelp said this and that" before him agreeing to come here.  Well fellas, they were out of the lamb. Seems like our neighbors had the last piece.  And some new arrivals were very disappointed as well.  An olive branch of pork tenderloin was offered but I know my fiancé hates pork. Luckily he agreed to go with the tasting menu (every table member must participate to receive) and we went on our merry way with also, a fois gras appetizer (which he loved, I could go either way - we're bird owners, goddammit). At the end of the day I think it's more suiting to give his review than mine (I'm picky AF), so 5 stars for everything. As for me, I'm happy that 1) their website is up to date, 2) their reservation system works, 3) their service was prompt even with limited staff and a small kitchen, 4) the food really exuded creativity with fun, apparent with the kind of odd plating.Things I would change?  1) It's noisy in there when it gets full (and damn, was it full for a freaking Wednesday evening).  I know there's nothing you can do about this but when I'm raising my voice to talk with my partner it SUCKS (no points deducted, obviously).  2) Portions are small - definitely an "eat with your eyes" sort of place.   Still left full-ish but (went home and ate a cup-of-noodles when no one was looking).  Disappointing seeing as the food took 1.5 hours to come out and the bill was over $100 for two people who don't drink alcohols.  Again, no stars deducted.  I love quirky neighborhood restaurants and this one is working.  I wish it the best of luck, but honestly don't see myself coming back.  It's fancy AF but not diverse enough in offerings for my wallet.  Maybe another couple menu changes till I see what I like. My fiancé thought it was the best fish and pork he's ever had (and this is coming from someone who was sold on the lamb idea and didn't get it).  So 5 stars cause we left happy enough and I want to support shopping local.  Just cause I wans't 100% sold doesn't mean someone else won't be! The waiters seemed to be hovering around with nothing too much to do, so they asked my girlfriend and I 3-4 times if we were ready to order, which got a bit meddlesome. However, we were all about the food so we didn't think about it too much. Now, onto the food!Marla's Bakery Bread with Honey Butter: Honestly this bread was really good! Inside was fluffy, and outside was a bit crispy. The honey butter served with it was also amazing.Di Stefano Burrata Toast: Very good flavors going on here. The milky burrata with the pumpkin butter on the bread was really great. Some of the herbs on top of the dish I did not fancy.Wild Mushroom - Radish Broth: Very earthy and hearty. Was a warm and satisfying since it was a cold day, but the addition of mint in the broth seemed to add a strange taste to the broth... so not my preferred dish.Monterey Black Cod: Cod was cooked really well, with the skin being uber crispy and fish itself being light and flaky.Superior Farm Lamb Chop: Was good, but was not great. My lamb chop came with a decent amount of gristle on it, with which I had to discard. In addition, the lamb came out more at a medium than a medium rare which I requested. The combination of the lamb with the fennel and also the radish greens was alright - the dish lacked some form of acidity. All in all, the meal at Cassava was exceptional but left something to be desired. If you're lucky, you sometimes come across a restaurant that is so warm and welcoming that the experience puts a smile on your face. The owner took time to stop by our table several times during our meal to answer questions and have a chat.  The food was also inventive and delicious. Some of the dishes are more standard European fare but there are a few standouts: Uni and kabocha custard was creative and full of flavor. The sweetness of the custard paired very well with the bright sea urchin. Black sesame panna cotta reminded of a chinese dessert my grandmother made while growing up but with a modern twist. This was a lovely way to end the meal. Wednesday is their wine night and it's 50% off all bottles. Score! My one slight tweak to the meal would be to get rid of the bowls for serving food.
