URRUTIA DESIGN is a boutique residential design studio located in Sausalito, California. We offer complete design services for Interiors & Exteriors. Our offices also includes Planning, Architecture (Interior Architecture), Project Submittals for Planning Approval & Building Permits, Landscape Design, Project Management and Furniture & Accessory Fabrication. URRUTIA DESIGN has been working in the design and development business for 25years, focusing mainly on major residential renovations in the Greater Bay Area and Northern California. As a company we are passionate about our work and our commitment to our clients, always trying to maintain a proper balance between a client's design vision, our own creative vision and the overall investment and value of the property. “It’s an intimate process, this home renovating business. Getting to know our clients personally, as well as learning about what it is they hope their home becomes. There are many, many conversations and get togethers along the way. In depth discussions about design direction, wishlists, budget, necessities, investment, etc. We forge amazing business and personal relationships along the way, while always keeping an eye on the home, design and best interest of the client. Whatever the home, whatever the budget, the final product has to be incredibly special for the client. Comfortable, sensible, beautiful, timeless, nurturing… a place to have incredible moments and create the right environment from year to year. The home is the nest. It’s the hub for our lives. And in recognizing this, we always strive to create ‘life changing’ environments for our clients. With our home designs, our main goal is to actually change the lives of our clients.” —Jason Urrutia/Principal, URRUTIA DESIGN https://www.houzz.com/pro/jasonurrutia/urrutia-design https://www.instagram.com/urrutiadesign/ https://www.urrutiadesign.com

What’s your interior design process?

1) We'll visit with you on site, get to know you and your home, talk with you about your goals and provide some spontaneous design ideas regarding how to transform your home. The meeting will give you an idea of how we'll approach your project, along with a potential project timeline and fees.

2) This is the initial phase of the project where we explore the many possibilities for the transformation of your home. This exploration is based on our initial site visit and follow up conversations regarding direction, design theme, finishes, use, etc. We use imagery and sketches to convey design intent. This phase typically involves the manipulation of existing floor plans showing direction for the new use of spaces. It can also include sketches showing alterations to the exterior elevations, site plan and interior spaces. We often rely on 3D renderings to bring even more clarity to the design direction.

3) Once the Conceptual Design/Design Development Phase is completed we begin work on Construction Documents. These computer generated drawings include technical details that will be submitted to your local planning or building department. If the project is of a larger scale, we'll submit to the planning department first. Once the general plan is approved, we'll generate the necessary additional documents for your building permit set. These are the drawings that will allow you to obtain your building permit.

Along with creating your Construction Documents, we'll need to create Interior Drawings of spaces within the project. Depending on the scope of work, Interior Drawings are typically provided for, but not limited to, Kitchens and Bathrooms. However, they can also include Bookshelves, a new Fireplace, Laundry Room, etc. These Drawings will give a more informative view of these spaces and provide necessary details for your contractor to properly build and carry out our intended design.

4) During the Conceptual Design and Design & Development phases we get an idea of not only how the house will function, but what it will look like. Running concurrent with the Construction Documents/Interior Drawings phase, we'll finalize all materials and finishes for your project. This is the "Selection of Finishes." In this phase we'll organize finishes per space and present them in a manner that makes sense to both you and your contractor. This will also allow you to see all of the finishes together, with simple, yet critical information. This information will contain color, size, vendor, price, quantity, etc.

5) Once construction of your project has been completed you'll receive notification from the Building Department that the work has been done in compliance with your design team and governing building codes. The project is now "final" and you are ready to enjoy your recently renovated space(s). Congratulations!

Thank you for taking the time to understand how we work. If we can answer any additional questions please give us a call. We'll look forward to speaking with you about your project! And in review of our Process we've placed below some simple examples showing the typical steps taken from the beginning of the conceptual design to the completed space.

Which interior design styles can you cater for?

We cater to all design styles and enjoy the creative challenge of "refreshing" a home while not compromising the integrity of the original architecture. If a client prefers to something more personable and dramatic, like altering the original style of the home, we are also happy to help them with their own unique dream and journey.

What do you love most about your job?

The best part of the job is having a great working relationship with the client, ultimately resulting in a great project. This entails having a true understanding of the client's wishes, bringing new and sensible ideas to the table, gaining the trust of the client, building the necessary foundation to move forward resulting in the most beneficial transformation of the client's home.

What inspired you to start your own business?

Simple. We wanted to have complete control of our interactions with our clients allowing us to provide the truest design approach to their projects.

Why should our clients choose you?

Finding the right home designer is the most important aspect of this journey. It sets the tone for all things to come. Basically, we're a one-stop-shop. From first meeting to project completion, we form a relationship with you that's built on sensibility and trust. And it's that trust that will create a very successful transformation of your home.

In short, we'll visit your home and listen carefully to your goals. We set in motion a design language for your design by providing design options at every corner. We discuss the pros and cons of all options and help you set a cohesive design that make spaces seamlessly relate to one another. This will make for a much improved home while also better protecting your real estate investment. And, if you change your mind about certain design elements, we can make those changes quickly to keep things moving! We're always available to our clients (text, email, phone) to answer questions that you may have.

We'll help you navigate through the contractor selection/bidding and always be available for quick interaction with your contractor to help with additional information and timing. We want you to have a smooth ride and get you back in your new home as soon as possible. It's important to be able to enjoy this experience as well as your new home!

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

Absolutely! A lot of our work and interaction with local clients is done via phone, as well as with emails containing design photos, interior drawings, hand sketches, 3D models, links to furniture/materials/specifications, etc. And with working around Covid we've been forced to work remotely even more often with our local clients. So we've essentially been refining our remote work skills for 2 and a half years.

With clients that are not local, we have a blue print for navigating this type of relationship and distance. And to further ensure that we stay on the same page with all aspects of our design, we communicate more often with them.

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

Covid has been challenging for all of us and maintaining safety has been our primary concern when interacting in person with our clients. When on site visits or meeting with vendors/municipalities/tradespeople we wear a protective mask and request proper ventilation and fresh air at all times. We've also relied more on outdoor meetings or phone meetings as an alternative to meeting indoors. Zoom has also become a big part of our practice.
