Willoughby Design. LLC

We’ve been working with Todd Willoughby since early in 2018. We had purchased a piece of land along the Chesapeake Bay and wanted to build a small but thoughtfully designed contemporary garden cottage for our retirement. After speaking with a number of architects we chose Todd and we’ve been very happy with that decision. Over several months, we worked have closely with him through the several design phases, culminating in a very complete set of construction documents, that we are now using for bidding. Throughout the process we’ve found Todd to be personable, smart, perceptive and creative. He’s been able to translate our ideas into working drawings that one of the contractors noted were called the most detailed he’d ever seen. Todd has captured our vision for an environmentally friendly house with solar and rain water harvesting. We have met with him many times talk through the many details, choices, and constraints you inevitably face. He’s done all the coordination needed with the other specialties – the engineers, surveyor, and solar energy firm. Having enjoyed this first part of the collaboration, we’re hiring Todd to help us through the bid evaluations and construction admin phases. The best recommendation would be our actual house, but until we get there we can say Todd has done an excellent and professional job getting us this far, and we look forward to working with him through to a completed project. I would like to share our story (as a thank you note to Todd)
We had a 3 bedroom house, and needed an extra room. Invited quite a few contractors and other architects but no one seemed to know what to do on a reasonable budget, and it was very depressing. .. Then Todd came, and everything clicked! Now we have a large beautiful new room (lifted the roof up), + other useful modifications in the house that we would not have otherwise. Todd's work was of an exceptional quality, on schedule (!!!), very reasonably priced (compared to the others), and no headaches with getting whatever permits from the county. Todd Willoughby is a very talented architect. We have had the pleasure of working with him to design our custom home in Middleburg, Virginia. Todd is extremely knowledgeable about residential and commercial construction. This is our third custom home, and we have worked with several other architects on various projects through the years. My husband is in commercial construction and has worked with numerous architects in the past forty years. The biggest difference with Todd is that we felt as though he wanted to design the house that WE wanted, not the house that he wanted to design for us. He listened to every suggestion and made every change we recommended to design our home exactly the way we envisioned.
His step by step design process allowed us to see our ideas come together. We were able to see whether we were achieving the look we had in mind. Todd gave us very helpful suggestions. He responded to every question and email almost immediately. He told us exactly what to expect and when to expect it.
His 3D model was amazing and unbelievably helpful in helping us to actually "experience" the sizes of the rooms, windows and many other little details. It gave a perspective that is just not possible to get from a 2D drawing.
Todd was even able to put the civil engineer's grading plan on 3D along with the house and property. We have never seen an architect be able to do this. It helped immensely.
We could not have been more pleased with Todd Willoughby's skills, knowledge, responsiveness, professionalism and ability to deliver exactly what we wanted by the date promised. His pricing for his services is very competitive and reasonable. He is truly a nice guy.
