What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?
Practice, practice, and practice. When I was working for Norwegian Cruise Lines we worked at least nine hours a day, seven days a week. I was photographing things all day under the most strict quality and quantity supervision. I was not unusual for me to shoot a thousand photos in a day. Onboard photographers were expected to perform under a variety of conditions ranging from outdoor and beach locations to crowded dining rooms to posing formals on a backdrop. These days I have been photographing three to five days a week. It is always different when you are expected to perform to the satisfaction of your client rather than to one's own creative impulses. Great photographs are always the ones where the photographer delivers something of genuine meaning to an audience who is eager to gather it.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
It is most important to make sure all of the client's questions are answered. My customers generally want to know how things are going to work: how long will it take? Does the agent need to be present when you are photographing the property? Clients typically ask me to emphasize a certain aspect of the property that he or she feels is a unique selling feature. All of my clients have become used to the process within one or two cycles of shooting and delivering photographs of listings.
What do you love most about your job?
I love the houses. I often say "I see more houses than the agents." It has been fascinating to see such amazing variety is something as simple as a residential floorplan and yet no two houses are exactly alike.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I have been working in the photography business my whole life. I went to film school then worked in camera retail for a very long time. I started doing freelance Photoshop work in 2005 and later started to work directly with commercial photographers in my hometown of Lancaster, PA. I moved to Chester County in 2014 where I cultivated a loyal group of demanding clients. I moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma in 2018 to be with my girlfriend.
