‘20 Certificate of Excellence

Voted 'Cartoonist-Of-The-Year' for the fifth year running - unfortunately, only by his wife, kids and Mum and Dad! Seriously though, this year Richard Duszczak celebrates 37 years as a freelance cartoonist. Always doodling as a child - he spent more time drawing in class than studying any of the subjects (loved the art classes though!) 'I really wanted to do something in the art field but during those years there wasn't any call for cartoonists!' So I drifted off into engineering and took an apprenticeship, which I never really took to - I didn't like getting my hands dirty! Drawing cartoons in my spare time I sold a few cartoons here and there and then one day while working in a factory the engineering union called a strike for higher wages 'Instead of going on the picket line I stayed at home and drew cartoons all day long. At the end of the six-week long strike they gave us a small rise. But I had made my mind up that cartooning is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, so I immediately handed my notice in. Not the best of ideas at the time, but at least I was now doing what I really wanted to do. I gave it 100% everyday and got rejected right, left and centre by all sorts of magazines. But took all the constructive criticism on the chin and knuckled down to improve my ideas and drawings. After about 18 months this started to take off and I was beginning to get cartoons accepted for publication and finally earning a wage as a cartoonist. People today still wonder when I'm going to get a real job!' 'I've put my hand to anything and everything that needed a cartoon - from drawing logo's for small local one-man-bands to creating humorous greetings cards for multi-national companies like Hallmark Cards in the UK and USA. Corporate clients include Burger King, NCH The Children's Charity, eBay Motors, Comet, Somerfields, Abbey National, Hedex, Andrews Salts, Tescos, Pentel, Baxi, Dulux, Unipart, Wash 'n' go, Weetabix and Alpen. Specialties:Cartoon design, cartoon character creation, cartoons for advertising, cartoon strips, caricatures for presentations and gifts, cartoons that attract attention!

What do you love most about your job?

Hi, my name is Richard Duszczak I’ve been a freelance cartoonist for over 36 years – I love what I do and this is the greatest job in the world, how could you not love drawing funny pictures all day long?
You can expect 110% enthusiasm and commitment when I work on your project.(Even after all these years I have absolutely no problem jumping out of bed in a morning!)

What inspired you to start your own business?

My main web site is TheCartoonStudio.com but have a sister one at CartoonMotivators.com
After leaving school with no art qualifications I drifted off into engineering and stuck
at this for ten years, just drawing cartoons in my spare time as a hobby. In 1982 we went
on strike and instead of me going on the picket line I sat at home drawing cartoons all
day. When the six week strike was over I decided I wanted to draw cartoons for a living
so handed in my notice to leave - a bit bold to go from earning a living to earning
nothing! As I hadn't actually sold anything up to that stage. But I kept myself going by
drawing 'Cartoon Motivators' that I'd view everyday to encourage me not to quit!
The first cartoon I ever had published was back in 1982 appearing in
The Weekly News is a national newspaper published every Thursday by the Dundee newspaper
chain D. C. Thomson.Billed as "the paper with the feel-good factor", it has been in
production since 1855, and contains news and features on a broad range of subjects. They
paid me £5(About $8) which was good money 37 years ago!
I had a spell where the only thing I drew was humorous greetings cards I drew a ton of
stuff for UK card companies with a highlight of supplying ideas and artwork for Hallmark
Cards in the UK and also US and many other greetings card companies.
Then moved onto illustrating educational books for major publishers.
I've also worked on campaigns for Burger King, Andrews Salts, Hedex, Vodafone, Barcardi
Martini, Lenovo, Velcro to mention a few.

Why should our clients choose you?

I'm very experienced in all areas of humorous illustration.
I'm passionate about what I do and will be on your project - I love what I do and hope this comes over when we work together.
