Maths Tutoring

Phil is a very friendly and helpful tutor, and always knows how to help with anything that my son does not understand on the curriculum. He is also always there to help with any problems which my son has with his homework outside of the sessions, and even gave my son another session after internet connection problems. More...

Q&As

I simply enjoy the challenge of showing every student how they can improve their maths by explaining in easily understood ways so that they quickly grow in confidence and readily improve their ability. I live to see the confident smiles on their faces at the end of every session! Beyond the basics, I love to explore how far I can push the thinking of some students beyond the scope of most classrooms.

I have had over 10 years experience successfully teaching in front of classes of 30 students, and despite good results, I have learned that I much prefer the individual one-to-one input and the response I receive back, where I can then begin to understand the thinking of the student and so improve their understanding far more rapidly.

I have plenty of experience - both in teaching and previously in both the engineering (research) and IT (software development) industries. I now have a relaxed, yet determined attitude: friendly and easily approachable, yet fully focused on the learning needs, from beginning Year 7 to A-Level Oxbridge candidates, with a view of the ‘bigger picture’ beyond just the confines of the classroom.

I only provide my services online through most common interfaces such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Messenger, Skype, etc., all work very well for my exclusive 1-to-1 sessions. This has been proven to be the most effective way to progress outside school as students chat and work within the comfort of their own home, with a more relaxed state of mind. As an add-on extra service for free, I am available most days (not quite 24/7 !) to answer any questions/problems students come across by texting or emailing explanations, workings or answers to help with work (inc. Homework) between regular weekly sessions.

Just not relevant to my optimum teaching methods where there is no opportunity to invade each other’s private space.

Services

Maths tutoring for all ability levels from KS3 (Year 8) through to GCSE (Foundation or Higher) and on to A-Level Maths and Further Maths, having taught at several outstanding secondary schools. I inspire and promote confidence to help understanding and so improve results.
Physics support available up to GCSE.
My professional research engineering and IT software development background prior to teaching marks me out as someone who is aware of the ‘bigger picture’ and not just a pure career-based teaching academic.
Face-to-face online 1-to-1 video sessions (minimum 1 hour) using any of the most common interfaces to communicate, with the students comfortable in their own home surroundings, are proven to be the #1 way for optimum improvement at any level.

I use whatever the appropriate GCSE or A-Level texts the students use for OCR, EdExcel, AQA, etc. with access to past papers and insider knowledge of how mark schemes work as a GCSE and current A-Level examiner for EdExcel. Additional resources to stretch thinking further (often going beyond the classroom) as necessary are used to develop higher level thinking for those at the top of the range.

I have access to various exam resources for public school entrance tests, having successfully helped students gain entrance to numerous schools, most recently this year, a student who gained a maths scholarship to Charterhouse.

Experience in supporting successful students in their preparation for typical Oxbridge interview questions and maths entrance tests.
