We had our ring ceremony and reception at Historic Oakland Manor, and it was a beautiful night. The venue was very reasonably priced, compared to others in the Baltimore/DC area, and Historic Oakland gives discounts to Howard County residents. The only drawback to the venue is that it has more limited space than you might think. The size ended up working for our wedding, but we were worried about how tight it would be at first. The venue was not set up properly for the Wedding there wasn't enough tables. Guest had to stand around waiting for a table. Then at 9 pm we were told to turn the music down and the wedding wasn't over until 11pm. Really Bad service not accommodating to guests or couple. More...

Historic Oakland was the perfect backdrop for our outdoor August wedding. We appreciated the ease of being able to choose our own caterer and the set up we desired. I gave it 1 stars because i loved the mansion and Latasha was very helpful in the beginning, however 5 days before my wedding i was told i had to pay for a extra expense that was NOT discuss in the first meeting back in November (my wedding was june 16) nor in my contract. It was a lot of hidden fees that were not discussed with me until 5 days before my wedding. Lori, the manager, was not apologetic about their mistake and miscommunication. Instead, she asked why do i feel “entitled” to get something that was told to me. Long story short 5 days before my wedding i had to pay an additional $225 for unexpected expense. The mansion was gorgeous but i would not recommend anyone to have a event here because of the many hidden fees and bad communication. More...

My husband and I recently got married at Historic Oakland. We first thought to have a courthouse wedding until our family made our wedding dreams happened. My sister in law recommended Historic Oakland and I was so grateful she did. There are so many places to have the ceremony and reception and the house is yours. Several different rooms for everyone to get ready and SO much room. The hardest part was picking which location for which part of the wedding because everywhere was so beautiful. I loved everything about my wedding. To say the staff at Historic Oakland was beyond amazing is an understatement. From the very first tour, I worked with LaTasha the entire time. She was so friendly and was willing to do anything possible to help make it the wedding of my dreams. Any wedding nerves you had were quickly calmed with LaTasha quick responses. The day of, was just as much of a breeze. We worked with Lisa who was always right there with any questions we had and did whatever she could to help things run smoothly. While getting ready I started to get a little nervous and felt hot (it was NOT hot in there) and Lisa turned the AC down even lower. Just for me. Those two ladies I’ll always remember. I would hands down recommend Historic Oakland for any event you have, wedding, baby shower, bridal shower, birthday party, etc. the venue is absolutely beautiful and the staff is beyond helpful and caring. They don’t give you enough time to set up for your event. Our party was separated and didn’t get a real chance to converse amongst each other. They told us they had a clean up crew but we still had to clean up bags of trash and such. In Total, it was not a great wedding experience for us. We wished that we would have picked another place. The venue was everything we were looking for. A beautiful back drop for our ceremony and pictures, a place we could decorate the way we wanted and a place that lets you bring your own alcohol and caterer (no bartender needed for our event). The staff was very friendly, helpful and flexible. A downside for me was that you couldn't decorate the night before and if your event is on a week day you can't get on the grounds until 2pm without paying extra. I attended a wedding here this past weekend and had a very unpleasand experience. It was a warm humid evening and while the wedding was indoors, the facility's air conditioning could not keep up with the heat being generated by the wedding guests. Early in the evening I found solace by standing under a ceiling vent and letting the cold air fall on me. After I discovered it, a lined formed for turns under it. Later in the evening the AC was either shut off or it stopped working. No air was flowing and the facility just kept getting hotter and hotter. My husband and I had our wedding here a little over a year ago and have mixed feelings about our experience here. During the wedding planning, LaTasha was fantastic to work with. She was extremely responsive over email and our interactions were very positive with her. However, there were some things in our contract with Historic Oakland that were very unclear. As these concerns arose, we worked with the staff to find appropriate solutions until the day of our wedding. When we arrived at our venue, the lights under the tent were not working properly (or so we were told by their staff member on duty). This was something that was supposed to be included in the package that we'd purchased. After the fact, we contacted them to let them know of our disappointment and nothing was done to rectify the situation. We went back and forth between Historic Oakland staff and the rental company that they work with, Elite Tents and Events, to find a solution and in the end neither party took responsibility for what had happened. Our wedding was beautiful but we left with such a bitter taste from the lack of professionalism that we decided not to share any of our wedding photos with them for use in their collateral. More...

I just had my wedding here on June 4th and the wedding itself was a success and we received wonderful compliments on the location and how beautiful the day was but the stress that we went through with some of their staff was uncalled for. Between not recieving paperwork when we signed the contract to have to put out more money for some details they had overlooked with said paperwork to other details we apparently could not negotiate on it was a fight the whole way to the wedding day. Along with our rehearsal dinner which had to be changed because they do not have rehearsals during the weekend which we were not told in advance but just a two mere weeks before the scheduled date we signed for that they overlooked when w we signed the contract. Thankfully they did have some other wonderful people on their staff that did help us, from advice to paperwork from Freddy to Daniel helping us that night with any little thing that came up these two people helped in so many ways to make our special day happen. All in all I say if you choose this location for a wedding make sure to look into every single detail from inside to out and if you find it's the place for you I hope you enjoy your special day as we did! Historic Oakland is perfect for any and all events! My sister choose Historic Oakland for her July 2017 wedding before I, her sister and wedding coordinator, had a chance to tour it and determine if it would comfortably handle a 130 +/- people. I was put as ease by the professionalism of the entire staff. This was my first true job as a coordinator and the stress was high, since it was family, but working with Tasha the months leading up to the 'Big Day' made everything easier. She was not only kind, and knowledgeable, but she went the extra mile, and that meant the most. On the day of the wedding, Daniel was polite & fast at setting up the ceremony chairs last minute, especially in the HEAT! Hope was very understanding and personable on the big day. It has been an amazing experience working with the staff at Historic Oakland in planning my wedding.  When I met the staff over a year ago to plan my wedding I was welcomed by helpful staff members ready and willing to help. From the beginning to the end the staff at the Manor made planning a smooth process. I even recieved my security deposit back in a timely manner.  The Manor has all one would need for a big family wedding at a decent price.  The best feature of having an event at the Manor is you are not required to have a caterer  nor are you penalized for having your family cater your event.  Couples looking for a venue were you are in control your reception menu, this is the place for you. Historic Oakland is beautiful and very affordable! I loved having the space all to ourselves and being able to customize every detail.

I had no complaints with the venue itself, but I found the staff less than helpful. Between the time I signed the contract and had my wedding they had fire marshalls come in and reevaluate their fire policies. They made several changes, including significantly decreasing the number of people that are allowed in the upstairs at one time. I understand that it wasn't the fault of the staff at Historic Oakland and that nothing could be done BUT I think it was unprofessional for them not to tell people about the changes. I found out on my own about 4 months after, and I had already done my seating chart, etc. So I had to redo the seating chart, programs (I put a map of the house on the programs), extend my time with my vendors so I could have a rearrangement in between the ceremony and reception, etc.

If the staff had been more responsive and professional and had told me when they found out instead of letting me find out on my own, everything would have been perfect!

Overall, I loved the venue.

I experienced Historic Oakland as an event attendee, for Yelp's Royal Halloween event 2016.I browsed the manor's website prior to the event to check out the pricing, and it seems quite reasonable to rent out for special events. It is a highly popular destination for weddings, with the optional use of its gardens and courtyard. I attended it for a night event, inside the manor. It was quite spacious and easily held about 200 people. There are many rooms to use creatively to your liking; for example, two of the main rooms were used for quick, cocktail-service dining, and the side rooms were utilized for a photo booth and DJ booth. The DJ booth had good sound hook up throughout the house, so there must be decent A/V equipment available for special programming, if you need it. The bathrooms were spacious, elegant, and clean- great for snapping a few selfies of your special event attire.As a fashion history fanatic, I personally adored the historic styling of the manor, and the period-appropriate paintings that adorned the walls. It added to the ambience of the grounds, but I feel it wouldn't conflict with a more modern or minimalist event, either. The overall décor of the manor is very easy to work with, whether you want to bring in a bunch of your own decorations, or work with the timeless elegance of the manor itself. I liked that there was plenty of parking on the grounds, and the manor was easy to get to. I would definitely consider it for a special event, if I had the occasion.As I was just an attendee, I cannot speak to the customer service or ease of planning, but from what I can tell on their main website, they were professional, approachable and flexible. We visited a few mansion options in the area before deciding Historic Oakland offered the best layout in our price range. We had the ceremony in the Bishop's Garden, appetizers/cocktail hour in the foyer, dinner /dancing in the ballroom, and cake cutting upstairs . We had around 80 guests and did not use the tent. All my guests said the mansion was beautiful and perfect for our classic wedding theme. We booked our wedding venue over a year in advance and I heard we received an even better price than brides that were booking in 2016. They had also power washed the outside of the building and everything looked even better than when we put down our security deposit. However, a few rules that we were told in 2015 had changed by the date of our wedding. I was under the impression we weren't allowed to have alcoholic drinks out unless they were being poured by a licensed bartender but when I asked about it again closer to our date, I was told it would be fine as long as it was not a 21 yo & under party. This was nice to know because this meant we could leave buckets of beer out for guests that didn't want to wait in line for the bartender. I was also unaware the red wine rule was no longer in use until I read a wedding wire review today. The staff was always very responsive to my e-mails/phone calls. I dropped by the venue the weekend before my wedding & we reviewed the layout. There a few disparities that were caught by me and the staff person on location and it was changed before the big day. Overall, everyone was very nice and the accommodating. My only suggestions would be to book early but then review everything before your big day to be sure everything is as you planned. I would highly suggest Historic Oakland to anyone looking for a mansion venue in the area! More...

I recently planned a business event at Historic Oakland. This was not a meeting but a fun night to thanks our customers. We had different food tables and activities (photo booth, caricaturists, henna tattoos, etc) in all the rooms, both upstairs and downstairs. Everyone had a wonderful time. The staff was very accommodating. I used the sound system and hooked up my phone for music. I also used the microphone to announce door prizes.
